Jon “Bones” Jones, widely recognized as one of the greatest mixed martial artists in UFC history, has publicly addressed his current health condition following a video of him speaking candidly about his physical issues circulating online. The clip, originally recorded in what Jones thought was a private exchange at a combat sports event in Houston, quickly spread online and reignited questions about both his future in competition and the severity of the injuries he has sustained over his career.
As reported by The Spun, Jones issued a detailed statement confirming that the long-term effects of his fighting career have left him in need of a hip replacement. The veteran fighter made it clear that the comments in the leaked video are accurate and that the damage in his left hi has reached the point where surgery is necessary. He admitted that, like many fighters who spend years inside the Octagon, he has endured chronic pain and physical wear that most people never see.
Jones did not minimize the toll his career has taken. He described walking around with pain on a daily basis as something that many professional fighters simply adapt to over time. The intensity and frequency of injuries, combined with the sheer physical punishment of competing at the sport’s highest level, have culminated in a situation where his body can no longer function without medical intervention.
Jones May Not Be Returning To The Octagon
Despite confronting a condition that could threaten his career, Jones expressed deep gratitude for his time in the sport. He stated that he would make the same choices again if given the chance, emphasizing that fighting was what he dedicated his life to for so many years. Jones made it clear that he does not regret the sacrifices he has made, even if they have resulted in substantial physical wear, something that his former opponent, Chael Sonnen, doesn’t believe.
“If you’re wondering whether it’s true, it is. I’m grateful for all my battle scars,” he said, underscoring that every mark on his body carries meaning and purpose in the story of his legacy. Jones also addressed critics who have speculated about his activity level in recent years. He suggested that some of the commentary about him slowing down stems from a misunderstanding of how a fighter’s career evolves over time, especially after reaching a level of accomplishment few others have matched.
Instead of rushing back into competition recklessly or just for money, he stressed that any decision to fight again would need to be grounded in significance. “The UFC knows the extent of my arthritis,” Jones said, adding that a return would require a motivating factor beyond financial incentive. He identified the upcoming UFC event scheduled for June at the White House as historically significant and could merit the physical challenge of fighting again.
Throughout his statement, Jones reiterated that while his body has deteriorated in certain ways, his competitive spirit and physical ability remain intact. He joked that he could still outperform most athletes in training, provided he takes the right precautions with warm-ups and stretching. His remarks balanced seriousness about his medical condition with confidence in his strength and continued work ethic.
Jon Jones has not competed since he defended his heavyweight title in 2024 against Stipe Miocic, a victory that marked another chapter in a career full of championship triumphs. After that fight, he initially stepped away from active competition and, at one point, was stripped of the belt. However, he later reentered the UFC’s anti-doping testing pool, signaling an openness to return.
Whether that happens or not remains uncertain. The hip replacement and ongoing management of chronic pain will play a major role in his future decisions.
