President Donald Trump is trying to help former Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh find a new job. After the Ravens fired Harbaugh on January 6, Trump posted a message on Truth Social asking other NFL teams to hire him. Harbaugh, 63, had been the Ravens head coach for 18 seasons.
According to People, Trump wrote “HIRE JOHN HARBAUGH, FAST” in his Truth Social post. He added that Harbaugh and his brother are “TOTAL WINNERS.” Trump’s public support came just one day after the Ravens announced they were letting Harbaugh go.
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said firing Harbaugh was a very difficult choice. He praised Harbaugh’s 18 years with the team and called him a “great man of integrity.” Bisciotti said the organization will always be thankful for what Harbaugh did in Baltimore.
Trump’s endorsement highlights their past White House connection
Harbaugh responded to his firing with mixed feelings. He said the news came with disappointment but also with gratitude and appreciation. The longtime coach didn’t share many details about his next steps.
Trump and Harbaugh have met before. In July, Harbaugh defended himself after people criticized him for visiting Trump at the White House. This happened after Trump had made negative comments about Baltimore in 2019, calling it a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” Like other high-profile figures who’ve faced controversy over unplanned public moments, Harbaugh had to address the backlash directly.
Harbaugh brought his brother Jim, who coaches the Los Angeles Chargers, and his nieces to meet Trump. When reporters questioned him about the visit, Harbaugh said it was an “amazing experience” for his family. His daughter, Jim’s daughters, and his parents all attended the meeting.
Harbaugh explained that seeing how Trump treated his mother was very meaningful to him. He said it’s rare to have such an experience as a family. He also told reporters he supports the president and wants him to succeed, just like he wants his quarterback and team to succeed. At 63, Harbaugh still has plenty of coaching years ahead, unlike veteran athletes managing their final seasons.
“It’s not often you get a chance to do something like that as a family,” Harbaugh said. “We were there, my daughter was there, Jim’s daughters were there. My mom and dad were there. My mom and President Trump, you know, seeing how he treated her was really meaningful.” The Ravens made their decision after Harbaugh’s long career with the team. Now, with Trump’s public endorsement, other NFL teams might consider hiring him for the next season.
