Jaguars Reporter’s Viral Liam Coen Exchange Sparked Backlash And Then Michael Kay Called Out Pat McAfee’s Journalist Criticism

A seemingly simple press-conference moment after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Wild Card loss blew up into one of the most talked-about stories in sports media this week. What started with a kind comment from a veteran local reporter became a flashpoint for debates over what sports journalism should look like in 2026. The exchange also drew in big names like Pat McAfee and it brought a response from longtime broadcaster Michael Kay.

The story began when Jaguars head coach Liam Coen, fresh off a 27-24 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, faced the usual post-game press scrum. Instead of a standard question, Jacksonville Free Press reporter Lynn Jones-Turpin offered supportive praise. That small deviation from convention turned into a viral moment that sent ripples through sports media.

The woman at the center of the controversy, Lynn Jones-Turpin, didn’t shrink from the criticism. Instead, she addressed it head-on during an appearance on News4Jax, where she was read some of the backlash and asked to respond.

“I don’t take no offense to (the criticism),” she said on air. “Listen, I’ve been in this business more than 25 years. I’ve interviewed Barack Obama, Terry Bradshaw, Tiger Woods. So he could say whatever he want about fake news.

“I am a member of the Black Press. NNPA, the National Newspaper Association that’s been around for more than 100 years. … I’m the associate editor of the Jacksonville Free Press, one of the more than 230 African-American newspapers still printing in this country today.”

That response only added more layers to the debate. Some people felt the original moment was too friendly for a press conference. Others saw it as a real reminder that reporters are human, too, and that respect can still exist even after a tough loss.

Michael Kay Jumped In After Pat McAfee’s Media Shot And The Debate Got Even Messier

Pat McAfee’s take on the situation added fuel to the fire. The popular ESPN talk show host did not just defend Jones-Turpin. He also took aim at traditional sports journalists as a group. In a post to X, McAfee used strong language, calling sports journalists “curmudgeon bums” who hate sports. He also claimed their “days are numbered,” and pointed to his ESPN show as proof that fans want a different kind of sports conversation.

That’s when Michael Kay stepped in. Kay said sports should be seen as a unifier for society, and he pushed back on the idea that journalists are trying to tear the games down.

“I don’t think that sport should be looked at as anything but a unifier for society. And I don’t prey on sports because I saw it was an easier path to make it. I think I’ve done my job in an honorable way,” Kay said, per Awful Announcing.

Kay also gave McAfee credit for what he does on TV. “Pat McAfee’s show is there to celebrate sports, and I think it’s great, and I think it’s a great thing on ESPN,” Kay said. “He gets the best guests, and obviously, people feel that’s a nice landing spot to give their side of the story. He has figured it out. He’s not there to grill people. He’s there to have a conversation with somebody who’s a newsmaker, make them feel comfortable, have a good time. The formula works. It’s perfect. But you couldn’t do that in a postgame scrum, Pat. You can’t. That’s not the place for it.”

In the end, the Jaguars press-conference moment became much more than a sound bite. It laid bare ongoing tensions in sports media about empathy versus objectivity and raised questions about how journalists should navigate moments that don’t fit neatly into a traditional script.
