'It's inexcusable': Buccaneers coach drops nine words you can't say on TV after watching his team blow a 14-point lead

He didn’t care that cameras were rolling.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles went on an angry, curse-filled rant after his team lost 29-28 to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. The Buccaneers gave up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter in a game they really needed to win. Bowles used nine words that can’t be said on TV.

This wasn’t just a regular loss. It was a complete disaster. The Bucs were tied with the Carolina Panthers for first place in the NFC South before the game. They looked like they had it won after taking a 28-14 lead in the fourth quarter. According to Yahoo Sports, their chance of winning reached 97.1% at one point.

The Falcons made many mistakes during the game, getting 19 penalties total. Even after Atlanta scored two late touchdowns, the Buccaneers still had chances to stop them. They forced the Falcons into a third-and-28 and later a fourth-and-15. But they couldn’t finish the job and lost 29-28 on a last-second field goal.

The coach’s raw anger shows how badly this team failed

When reporters asked Bowles what he told his players in the locker room, he gave a harsh 30-second speech filled with curse words. He started by saying, “It’s inexcusable. You don’t make excuses.” Then he said the players need to feel the pain of losing. He told them, “You’ve got to f***ing care enough where this s*** hurts”.

Bowles said this isn’t just about showing up for work. He called it their livelihood and asked the players to look at their own performance. He wanted to know if they really know their job and can do it well.

The coach made it clear there was no easy way to talk about this loss. He said, “You can’t sugarcoat that. It was inexcusable and there’s no answer for it. No excuse for it. Look in the mirror.” Losing a game that was 97% guaranteed to win is terrible for the team’s confidence.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield also took responsibility for the loss. He completed 19 of 34 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Mayfield was very hard on himself after the game. He said the loss falls on his shoulders and that he can’t throw that interception.

He admitted the offense needed to play better even though the defense was up by two scores late. Mayfield said, “This one’s going to haunt me.” Earlier this season, Mayfield faced controversy over celebration fines that sparked debate among fans.

Bowles is in his fourth season as the Buccaneers head coach. He took over after Bruce Arians retired. The team has a 34-31 record under him with three playoff appearances. But this loss makes getting to the playoffs much harder. The Buccaneers are now in second place in the NFC South, behind the Panthers.

They still have two games left against Carolina, so they can still win the division. The stakes are high as Mayfield chases his division title hopes this season. But they just lost almost all room for error by giving away a game they should have won easily.
