‘I'm running Venezuela': Cowboys owner drops strange Trump reference while discussing team's future plans

Nobody was expecting that reference, for sure!

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made an unusual comment when talking about the team’s plans for next season. During a press conference, Jones brought up a recent statement by Donald Trump while discussing the Cowboys’ future. The 83-year-old owner referenced politics in a way that caught many people off guard and made reporters in the room laugh.

According to People, Jones made the Venezuela comment when a reporter asked if head coach Brian Schottenheimer would help choose the team’s new defensive coordinator. The Cowboys recently let go of their previous defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, earlier in the week. Jones responded by saying, “Trump just said it. I’m running Venezuela,” which seemed to be his way of saying he’s in complete control of the team’s decisions.

The Cowboys had a rough season, finishing with a record of 7-9-1. Their defense struggled throughout the year, even though quarterback Dak Prescott played well. Jones, who also serves as the team’s president and general manager, now has more money to spend since the team is no longer paying former star player Micah Parsons’ large contract.

Jones plans to spend big money this offseason

Jones made it clear that the Cowboys are ready to spend heavily to improve the team. “Bottom line is this [offseason] is, yes, very important,” Jones said. “They’re right. We want to, while Dak is playing the game and got it down the way he’s got it, we want to get out here and basically do better than what we did this year.”

“So, combination of those things gives us the incentive to, dare I say it, bust the budget to try to get something done now. Yes. Yes. We’ll do some dramatic things,” he added.  Despite the disappointing season, Jones remains hopeful about what’s coming next.

He pointed out that six teams made the playoffs this year that didn’t make it last year, which shows that quick turnarounds are possible in the NFL. Teams can complete historic season turnarounds when they make the right moves, and Jones thinks the Cowboys can fix their defense faster than people might expect, even though the team clearly has several weak spots that need attention.

This month marks 30 years since the Cowboys last won a championship at Super Bowl XXX. Jones is very aware of how long it’s been since the team’s last title. He shared his personal goal of becoming the NFL owner with the most Super Bowl wins before he retires. Jones has won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys, but New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has six championships.

Jones said he still has a lot of work to do to reach his goal. He mentioned that he’s currently at the “second rung in the ladder” among NFL owners when it comes to Super Bowl victories. Other teams have shown they’re willing to make stunning roster moves to reshape their future, and Jones appears ready to follow that same aggressive approach.
