Ilona Maher Got Hit With Another Body-Shaming Comment Then Her Clapback Put Every Online Critic On Notice Immediately

Two-time Olympic rugby star Ilona Maher found herself under attack from online body-shamers again this week. A social-media critic took aim at her appearance in a photo, and Maher’s response did more than defend herself. It sent a clear message to anyone who thinks it is their place to judge women’s bodies.

What kicked all of this off was a comment left on one of Maher’s posts. Someone wrote that the athlete looked “pregnant” in a tight orange dress she had shared in a photo. Maher didn’t ignore it. Instead, she made a direct video addressing the remark while wearing the same dress and speaking to her followers.

Maher even put on the same dress again for the viral video, and she included a screenshot of the comment. The man later deleted it after she fired back.

“I wanted to do it again for you all,” she said. “So to him, I say, that’s just a normal woman’s body. You probably haven’t seen a woman naked in a long time, if ever, and I hope you never get the privilege to again, because that’s just how we are, okay? That’s just what we’re working with.”

“Me, professional athlete,” she said as she turned to give a side view to the camera. “I always have this. It’s just part of me.”

This isn’t the first time Maher has had to respond to comments about her body. During her journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics, she also addressed critics who focused on her weight or body mass index (BMI). She made the point that numbers do not define health, fitness, or athleticism.

Fans and followers immediately rallied around Maher. Many praised her for owning her story and pushing back against people who leave hurtful comments. Her response became less about one critic and more about how women are judged and talked about online. It was a message that clearly hit home for a lot of people.

Maher’s “Fire Away” Warning Became A Bigger Message About Confidence And Online Hate

Maher’s reaction was sharp, but it also felt bigger than just a clapback. Instead of only calling out one person, she used the moment to make a clear point about confidence, body image, and how people talk online.

The Olympic rugby player shared a message to critics who “make dumb comments” about her online, letting them know in a post on Instagram that she’s capitalizing on their negativity and won’t be holding back moving forward.

“Honestly loving when people make dumb comments cause it gives me content so fire away. I won’t be blocking out your names when I respond,” she captioned the post of herself posing on the red carpet at The Hollywood Reporter and Spotify pre-Golden Globes party on Jan. 8.

Her message wasn’t about hurting people back. It was about confidence and self-acceptance. Maher reminded her audience that fitness does not have one specific look. She also made it clear that not fitting someone else’s narrow idea of beauty does not make a person less valid or less strong.

Whether you agree with her approach or not, Maher’s point is easy to understand. People deal with unwanted opinions about their appearance all the time. By turning rude comments into a bigger message, she shifted the focus from judgment to awareness. She also made it clear she will not stay quiet when someone tries to tear her down.
