‘I might need to sit this one out’: Chargers receiver reveals exactly what he needs to do Sunday to unlock a massive payday, then immediately second-guesses it

Can't blame the man for chasing his bag.

While many Chargers players are expected to rest in their final game, star wide receiver Keenan Allen has different plans. The veteran player wants to hit his contract bonuses before the season ends. Even though most veterans would prefer to rest before the playoffs, Allen seems ready to play.

According to Heavy.com, Allen has caught 74 passes for 741 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. His final game against the Broncos could earn him serious money if he reaches certain goals. He can make $750,000 if he catches 6 passes, $250,000 for gaining just 9 yards, $250,000 for getting 134 yards, $250,000 for scoring 2 touchdowns, and another $250,000 for scoring 4 touchdowns total.

With backup quarterback Trey Lance starting this weekend, both players joked about their contract bonuses.“Hey Trey we get this six we going out to eat bro,” Allen told Lance. “I need a new car,” Lance replied. “S***,” Allen reacted. “I might need to sit this one out.”

Allen’s incentives create an interesting situation for the Chargers

Coach Harbaugh could easily let Allen play long enough to catch six passes and earn at least some extra money. The nine receiving yards would push Allen past a million dollars in bonuses. With both Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey unlikely to play, Allen might get even more chances to reach his goals.

The six catches might be tough for Allen to get. He has not caught six passes in one game since Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts. The Broncos have a strong secondary that will make things difficult.

However, Allen has reached six catches in three games this season, so it is possible. Like ESPN’s awkward New Year’s broadcast moment, sometimes sports create unexpected situations.

The Chargers have ruled out several players for this game. Running back Omarion Hampton is out with an ankle injury, and cornerback Nikko Reed cannot play due to a hamstring problem. Left tackle Jamaree Salyer and safety Elijah Molden are doubtful with hamstring injuries as well.

Five more Chargers players are questionable, including Kimani Vidal with a neck issue and RJ Mickens with a shoulder injury. With so many players hurt or resting, Allen’s bonus goals become more important.

Allen has meant a lot to this team over the years, and it would be special if he earned his pay raise. In other NFL news, Caitlin Clark recently picked her new team after the Chiefs missed the playoffs.

Harbaugh might find a way to get Allen his million dollars, but keeping him healthy matters more. Wanting extra money is one thing, but risking an injury to earn it is another story entirely.
