Brooklyn Nets star Michael Porter Jr. has revealed he’s been playing through a knee injury, which he believes is affecting his recent performance. This comes just weeks before the trade deadline. The news is concerning for the team, especially since Porter Jr. has been having an excellent season and was on track for his first All-Star appearance.
According to ClutchPoints, the injury is an MCL sprain that happened during a January 7 loss to the Orlando Magic. The 27-year-old forward finished that game even after getting injured. He didn’t appear on the team’s injury report for their next game, suggesting the severity wasn’t immediately clear.
Porter was honest about how the sprain has limited him recently. He told Brian Lewis that his knee has been sore and it’s affecting his game. “I actually was dealing with an MCL, a little sprain against Orlando,” he explained. He noted that because of the soreness, “I haven’t been as explosive on some of my movements to get myself open. That’s getting better.”
Porter Jr.’s efficiency has taken a noticeable hit in recent games
Before this injury, Porter was one of the NBA’s most efficient scorers. However, the last couple of weeks have shown a clear drop in his production, and the timing is bad for a team trying to climb the standings. Over his last five games, Porter has averaged 23.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.2 turnovers. While those numbers aren’t terrible, his shooting percentages show the real impact. He’s only hitting 43.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range during this stretch.
That’s below the top-tier efficiency expected from the 6-foot-10 sharpshooter. The Nets have struggled as well, going 1-4 in those five games. The team’s difficulties mirror other controversies surrounding NBA figures recently. Despite the discomfort and lower efficiency, Porter has continued to play.
He’s appeared in five of Brooklyn’s last seven games, though he sat out two recent back-to-backs for rest. He hasn’t played in any back-to-back games this entire season, showing the team is already careful about managing his workload.
Coach Jordi Fernandez said the team would not risk Porter’s long-term health if the injury was serious. “He had some discomfort, but he kept playing. He’s played all the way through,” Fernandez said. He stressed that the team values their players’ health. “If it were something that didn’t allow him to play, we would do whatever it takes to figure that out. But he’s played, so I don’t think I have anything else to say from that.”
This situation is happening under significant pressure. Porter is having a breakout season as the team’s top option, which is why he’s being considered for an All-Star spot. But that success has also made him one of the most talked-about names on the trade market, with the February 5 deadline approaching fast. Sports personalities have been vocal about various debates lately, including Stephen A. Smith’s controversial legal commentary.
