There are some high-level mechanics in Madden 26 that can make the difference between scoring a touchdown and watching the defense take an interception back for a pick-six. While knowing how to read a defense, which audible is best, or what kind of throw to use are all important elements when you’re on offense, small mechanics often go under the radar.
One of those mechanics is the pump fake, which sees your quarterback fake a throw to a receiver in Madden 26, only to then throw the ball to another receiver or get a defensive player off the intended target.
If you’re trying to figure out how to pump fake in Madden 26, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ll also go over some of the best use-cases for this mechanic so you can immediately start practicing it in-game.
How To Pump Fake A Pass In Madden 26
Fortunately for anyone attempting to master the pump fake, it’s one of the simpler mechanics to actually perform on offense in Madden 26. What’s more difficult is finding the best time to use the pump fake, but we’ll talk about that later in the article.

For now, check out the steps below to see how the pump fake is done:
- Pick an offensive passing play, preferably one where one or two receivers are running a longer route, such as a post, fade, vertical, etc.
- Hike the ball and wait for the receivers to get into their route
- When you want to pump fake, double-tap the button of the receiver you want to fake the pass to. So if you’re targeting your Square/X receiver, double-tap Square/X
- You want to be sure you’re double-tapping the button as quickly as possible, as waiting too long in between taps will result in your quarterback throwing the pass like normal
- You can also make the pump fake faster and smoother by holding R2/RT when double-tapping the button. Doing this will have a higher likelihood of making a defense think you’re actually going to throw the ball
While it’s nothing too complicated, you’ll still want to practice the pump fake mechanics before you try it out in a real game with some stakes on the line.
Hopping into quick play against the CPU or going into the practice modes in Madden Ultimate Team or Franchise would be the best ways to get the pump fake down pat.
Best Times To Use The Pump Fake In Madden 26
Now that we’ve covered how to actually perform the mechanic, what is the best situation for the pump fake in Madden 26?
The overall purpose of the pump fake is to trick the defense into thinking you’re throwing to one receiver or in a general direction. By doing a pump fake, you can get the opposing defenders to make a break for the receiver you’re pretending to target.
If you fool the defense enough, you should be able to then throw to a more open receiver after the pump fake is done.
Naturally, you don’t want to use the pump fake too often, as it takes a couple of seconds for the fake animation to progress. During this time, your quarterback is more vulnerable to fumbling via a sack if the defense gets pressure quickly enough.
If you spam pump fakes, then the defense won’t be tricked by them, and they’ll likely blitz more often since they know they have more time to reach the QB.
With that said, if you use the pump fake sparingly, the best situation for it would be if you want to try to draw a safety from one side of the field to another. This can open a passing lane for a one-on-one chance with a streaking receiver down the field, as the safety won’t be in position to cover your receiver over the top.
You can also use a pump fake to draw a coverage linebacker into breaking on a slanting receiver across the field. Once they leave their position, you have the middle of the field open for a deeper receiver to catch the ball.
There are different situations for a pump fake in Madden 26, but as long as you know what you’re trying to accomplish with the mechanic, you should have an easy enough time pulling them off.
