How to Play Better Off-Ball in NBA 2K26

Poetry in motion.

Facing Off-ball defense can be annoying, but it’s far from unbeatable in NBA 2K26. The AI has predictable weak spots you can target, and smart offense helps you punish defenders who abandon their players.

So, let’s dive into playing off-ball better. Here’s everything you need to know.

This should be your foundation. Call a pick-and-roll with the player your opponent is off-balling with, and you’ll force them to react immediately.

Hold L1/LB, select the off-ball icon they’re guarding, the screen setter comes over, and you force defensive adjustments. Most off-ballers react much more slowly, and sometimes don’t even bother rotating. So your roll man or shooter is wide open for the bucket.

However, you should vary your approach within the pick-and-roll. Let the screen play out and hit the roller sometimes. Other times, tap L1 again before the pick and trigger a slip to the basket. Mix in pick-and-fades with a stretch big, then call the screen, and press R1 to have them fade. Next, watch yourself get an open three nearly every possession.

Attack The Mid-Range And Step-Back

A lot of off-ball players expect three-point hunters and paint dunks, leaving the mid-range wide open. After a stop or a defensive rebound, use step-back jumpers and mid-range fades. The AI contests poorly from range, and opponents who aren’t controlling the defender will likely not bother your shot. Step-backs are great for pulling away from the AI, especially when you’re playing against tight off-ball pressure.

Space The Floor Properly

Spacing isn’t flashy; it’s simply smart basketball. Position your players in the corners and wings, spreading the floor out. This does two things: it opens up lanes to the basket for cuts, and it keeps your teammates from clogging the paint. With good spacing, the AI collapses inward on drives, leaving shooters and cutters wide open. When things are congested, nothing seems to work.

Use Backdoor Cuts Aggressively

If the off-ball defender is playing in the corner, punish them. Press L1, pick their icon, and send them on a backdoor cut. Off-ballers are by definition out of position, and a sharp cut to the rim is nearly impossible to defend. This works even better if your opponent never switches to on-ball defense; they become predictable and vulnerable.

Push the Pace And Fast Break

Anytime you force a miss or get a stop, push the ball and run the break. Transition offense completely exploits off-ball defense because your opponent is too busy sprinting back to their player to make a move, rather than making wise rotations. One good stop and a quick bucket on the fast break disrupts their entire rhythm. If they’re off-balling to avoid on-ball difficulty, forcing them into a transition game is perfect.

Bottom line: Off-ball defense is passive. Use pick-and-rolls, smart spacing, and quick ball movement to break it away.

NBA 2K26 rewards teams that play with intent and patience. Meanwhile, off-ballers lean on the CPU, and the CPU has limits. Once you figure those out, you’ll score all game long against off-ball defense.
