Add some flair to your catches.

To perform a one-handed catch, press the LB button (Xbox) or the L1 button (PlayStation) to send a “Catch” command to your player. Do this while the ball is mid-air, and your player will attempt to catch the ball with one hand.

There’s not so much skill involved in this maneuver as there is game knowledge. Although you’re simply pressing a button, whether or not the catch will be successful depends on how well you’ve read the game. Let’s take a look at the drawbacks of performing a one-handed catch.

When You Shouldn’t Try A One-Handed Catch

One-handed catches aren’t some amazing display of skill; they’re more so for the aesthetic factor. But if you really want to perfect your one-handed catch, here are situations you should avoid:

  • Your player is still running to the drop: One-handed catches are difficult while stationary; doing it while running would be a miracle. Don’t test this out and assume you aren’t doing it right.
  • You’re throwing to a covered receiver: This technique should only be applied to open receivers. If a receiver is being covered, the chances of them dropping the catch or getting intercepted are extremely high.
  • The player lacks catching stats: You also need to look at your player’s stats. If catching the ball isn’t one of their strengths, you should probably avoid this. It may take time to pull off, and even then, it could fail against stronger teams.

What Catches You Can Try Instead

If you’re not able to get the one-handed catch, try these other catches instead. They’re more consistent and reliable against a higher number of teams.

  • Running Catch: A running catch is ideal if your player hasn’t reached the drop zone yet. This also increases their yards by a few since they get a running start on the defense.
  • Aggressive Catch: The aggressive catch is the best catch if your receiver is being covered. With this offensive method, your player will try to get ahead of the defense to reach the ball first and start running.
