Hilary Knight has built a reputation as one of the most unflappable competitors in women’s hockey, something she demonstrated recently in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. However, even the battle-tested Knight admitted that some moments are more nail-biting than that. Just one day before leading Team USA women’s hockey to the gold medal, Knight proposed to her partner, U.S. speed skater Brittany Bowe.
After that, the team captain emerged as one of the heroes during the gold-medal game against Canada while playing with a torn MCL. She tied the game at 1-1 with over two minutes left. Her teammate, Megan Keller, secured the 2-1 victory with a goal of her own, powering Team USA to their first Olympic goal since 2018. It was her fifth Olympic medal.
As reported by PFSN, Knight said she lives for those types of situations on and off the ice. So much so that she popped the question while standing over a metal grate. She told this story on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying: “I wouldn’t recommend it. I like high-pressure situations, I guess.”

It Was A Poetic Move
Many wondered why she would make a life-changing decision while competing on the highest stage of any sport. Besides her love for chasing the thrill, she explained that it was the best move, with Bowe set to race for a final time two days later. She finished fourth in the women’s 1,500-meter race, concluding her legendary speed-skating career.
“I was really nervous during the Olympics, and logistically it just made sense with her schedule and my schedule,” she explained. According to Knight, she was so in the moment that she just went down on one knee, not knowing that she could risk the wedding ring slipping through the grate’s cracks. “I just went full send. I didn’t think about the grate until I was hovering over it!” she recalled.
Knight’s decision to propose before the final was not only personal but also poetic. She and Bowe first met at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Knight succinctly summarized this in her announcement post on her Instagram. The Olympics brought us together. This one made us forever,” she wrote.
Since the Olympics, Knight has remained in the public eye, especially when a joke by President Donald Trump, which she called distasteful, spoiled the women’s team’s Olympic win. She, alongside her teammates and members of the men’s team, doubled down in their criticism, going on SNL to shade Trump.
