Games like Wreckreation are hard to come by. You won’t often hear about a sandbox racing game that allows players to build their own tracks to race. And that’s why the direction in which the game is heading is disappointing. However, Three Fields Entertainment haven’t given up yet. Wreckreation has recently received its third major content update, and things may start looking up.
After publishers pulled funding for the game, Three Fields Entertainment set up a Patreon to support future updates. While not at its max potential, the updates have still been positive overall. Let’s take a look at the state of the game following the mid-December update and what the foreseeable future holds.
Breaking Down Wreckreation’s Mid-December Update

Before I give you my opinion on where the game stands, take a look at the mid-December update yourself. The update was the third major content update in the game and contained both gameplay-related and platform-related upgrades. The major crux of the update was the addition of new Live Mix buildings and objects. There are now 9 new Live Mix buildings and 22 objects to choose from when creating your racetrack of doom.
A new area has also been opened up for use, Maccoll County. Three Fields Entertainment used this to announce the game’s update on X:
“Maccoll County Planning Office has granted permission for the new Twining Woods Development – construction work has started and buildings are already starting to pop up 🚧🚧”.
The story behind it is that a mountain had been cleared in Maccoll County, which led to the area being opened up. This is a major improvement, in my opinion, since sandbox games are continually expanding their maps. New areas help create a sense of intrigue amongst players.
Finally, we have new video settings for both Xbox and PlayStation players. You can now choose between Quality and Performance mode. Quality mode improves the visual quality to 30 FPS and grants players better visual detail. It also targets consistent 4K resolution. Performance mode, on the other hand, keeps your system stable by lowering graphics, but providing smoother gameplay without any crashes.
If you’re having trouble finding community content, Wreckreation now highlights the most played and highest rated challenges, with an additional community challenge filter available on the map. And that’s the gist of the mid-December update.
State Of The Game: Has Wreckreation Improved?

It’s now time to talk about where the game stands, especially compared to its state on release. We have to take into consideration the financial constraints the studio is going through, considering THQ has reduced/stopped funding for the game. The game now runs on Patreon donations to keep making updates.
I will say the game has improved quite a lot since its release. There have been a plethora of glitch fixes that have made gameplay more stable, but we have also seen great strides in gameplay. The update in early December introduced cross-play support between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Crossplay increases the player base substantially and allows friends to easily play with each other cross-platform.
They’ve also worked quite hard on visual improvements and minor details. Features with physics-related issues were fixed to increase realism, while different camera angles were also added and/or corrected. We see quite a lot more variation when it comes to building using Live Mix with all the new additions to the game.
Both the Share Codes and the Current Games List were major updates to the game. Share Codes allows easy sharing of courses between friends for the user-created challenges, while the Current Games List helps players find more active sessions. These were necessary features following the release of crossplay.
And last, but definitely not least, quality-of-life changes. Whether those were fixing game crashes, memory leaks, or simply AI behaviour, Three Fields Entertainment really went all out to keep this game afloat. While Wreckreation might not be everything we were hoping for, the game has improved significantly and continues to do so.
The Future Of Wreckreation
I understand the skepticism regarding the future of the game, given that it hasn’t fulfilled all its promises. The game is currently in a rocky state, not due to a lack of effort by developers, but rather a financing issue. Depending on how the Patreon situation goes and whether Three Fields Entertainment can find another publisher, we might just see the game’s revival.
For now, nothing can be said for certain about the future. But if you were disappointed by the game at launch, I’d definitely recommend giving it another try.
