Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has been one of the most electrifying players in the NBA since entering the league, but his 2025-26 season has been anything but smooth. Between numerous injuries, disciplinary issues, and ongoing trade chatter, the situation surrounding the 26-year-old guard has taken a complicated turn. Most recently, Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman delivered an answer during a press conference that left the basketball world wondering just what Morant’s future holds.
Morant suffered a left elbow UCL sprain in late January during a loss to the Atlanta Hawks, and that injury quickly sidelined him with no clear timetable for return. The Grizzlies have said he will be re-evaluated around the All-Star break, but beyond that, very little has been shared publicly about when, or even if, he’ll suit up again this year.
According to Newsweek, when asked directly about Morant’s status, Kleiman offered a cautious and somewhat evasive response, emphasizing that the decision will ultimately be made by medical professionals. “It’s a medical determination,” he said, brushing off more definitive answers about whether Morant will take the court again during the 2025-26 campaign.
Morant Might Not Return This Season
Asked if he could commit to Morant playing again this season, Kleiman declined to make that guarantee. In addition, he admitted there was no update on Morant’s rehabilitation and insisted he intends to continue having honest conversations with the guard as the situation evolves.
Kleiman’s restraint in speaking publicly about Morant reflects how sensitive the situation has become. The Grizzlies have already undergone a significant roster shake-up this season, including trading longtime All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz, and Morant’s unclear role has only added fuel to speculation about where the franchise is heading.
Trade rumors had swirled in the weeks leading up to the NBA’s Feb. 5 trade deadline, with multiple teams reportedly interested in acquiring Morant at the right price. Yet despite the buzz, no deal ever materialized before the deadline passed, leaving Morant with Memphis, at least for now.
One reason for the lack of movement was likely Morant’s injury status and the risk it presents for teams considering taking on his contract. Some reports suggested that his trade value had actually dropped in recent weeks because other teams were hesitant to absorb his massive salary while he’s injured and uncertain. That hesitancy added another layer of uncertainty to his situation.
Off the court, Morant’s season has also been part of broader storylines. Earlier in the campaign, disagreements with the Grizzlies’ coaching staff led to at least one suspension for conduct deemed detrimental to the team, and his own comments at times suggested growing frustration. The young star even got into a heated confrontation with teammate Vince Williams during their international trip.
Despite all this, there are still voices both inside and outside the organization that maintain optimism about Morant’s future. His talent is undeniable, when healthy and focused, he has been one of the most dynamic guards in the league. And while this season hasn’t gone the way many expected, there remains a possibility that his status could change between now and the summer, when teams evaluate him again for potential moves or rebuilding plans.
