Grieving Woman Went To Crater Of Diamonds State Park Months After Losing Son And Father, Then Her Shovel Hit Something Life-Changing

She found a gem!

A woman visiting Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park made an unexpected discovery during what had been a personal trip months after enduring two family losses. The visit carried a more personal weight, as the woman had recently been coping with the deaths of her son and father before deciding to spend time at the site.

As reported by KAIT8, Keshia Smith was searching the park’s 37-acre diamond search field when her shovel made contact with something in the soil. According to the report, she initially did not realize what she had uncovered and continued digging before park staff later confirmed that the object was a diamond that weighed 3.09 carats. The discovery stood out not only because of its size but also because it came during a visit where she had aimed to look for comfort.

Park officials later verified the find and recorded it as one of the more notable discoveries of the year, with her gemstone being the second-largest. Park interpreter Sarah Bivens recalled Smith’s reaction in detail. “Smith exuded joy from the moment she walked in the door. It’s not uncommon for larger diamonds like this to be found during the first hour of the finder’s dig time. Sometimes, I think diamond finds like this are just meant to be,” she said.

Smith Needed This Win

In October 2025, Smith lost her son, followed by the death of her father in March of this year. The visit to the park, however, had been planned more than a year in advance, before either loss occurred. Over time, it became part of her grieving process, which began in April when she returned to the site with her boyfriend and brother. During the trip, they also spent time among other visitors at the park.

That’s why when Smith dug up the small, shiny gem and confirmed the specifications, she was elated. “To me it looks like a heart. That’s the first thing I saw when I found it,” she recalled. “I have felt so much pressure the last six months. In October, I lost my son, and we just buried my dad a week ago. It has been a lot!… I really needed this. I really prayed for this, and I just can’t believe it actually happened!”

Crater of Diamonds State Park regularly sees thousands of visitors annually, though only a small number leave with diamonds of notable carat weight. The woman’s find was among the larger registered discoveries reported at the park in recent months. As of writing, there have been 324 finds this year.

Usually, when someone or something, like a dog, keeps digging, they find something strange, say a potential piece of evidence to a 160-year-old murder mystery. Not Smith, though. She is lucky, but not as lucky as a Kentucky man winning $167 million in the lottery. Still, a 3.09 carat diamond is life-changing, especially considering what she is going through right now.
