Former teammate Anthony Morrow has made a bold prediction about Kevin Durant’s NBA future, suggesting the superstar could finish his Hall of Fame career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team that originally drafted him in 2007. It’s a surprising idea, given that Durant left OKC nearly a decade ago to join the Golden State Warriors, where he won two NBA championships and earned Finals MVP honours.
According to ClutchPoints, Morrow, who spent two seasons alongside Durant in Oklahoma City, believes a return would make perfect sense. He thinks Thunder fans would welcome their former star with open arms, and he sees it as a fitting way for Durant to close out his illustrious career.
“Our fans are the greatest fans on Earth, any sport to me,” Morrow said. “And you know, it is what it is. And not a hot take, but I’m going to just say this: Honestly, I think Kevin Durant is going to end his career in Oklahoma City like when he’s done. I think Kev is going to come back to Oklahoma City for real.”
Durant’s current situation makes this prediction seem unlikely
Durant now plays for the Houston Rockets, one of the few teams that could challenge the defending champion Thunder this season. The Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Minnesota Timberwolves are also considered strong contenders.
Durant didn’t plan to be in Houston. He said he wanted to retire with the Phoenix Suns, but was traded to the Rockets during the offseason. The trade was part of several moves that broke up the Suns’ core, leaving only All-Star Devin Booker.
Durant doesn’t believe Thunder fans would welcome him back. Despite OKC winning its first championship in franchise history recently, Durant still heard boos when he returned to the Paycom Center. Other players have faced similar challenges, like when Sam Darnold walked to the Super Bowl and left his GM agonizing.
Durant thinks fans still hold a grudge because he left for the Warriors right after OKC lost a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals. “I just think there’s a lot of controversy surrounding my name in Oklahoma City,” Durant said. He worries that storylines about him might overshadow celebrating what the Thunder accomplished last season, adding “Some might involve me, which is unfortunate.”
Durant has one year left on his current contract, with a player option worth $46 million for the 2027-28 season. Player controversies aren’t unique to Durant, as Doc Rivers recently slammed a former player amid the Giannis trade discussions. While Durant doesn’t expect to return to OKC, Morrow remains convinced it will happen.
