FIFA 22 Gameplay Reveal - EA Play Spotlight

The latest EA spotlight series is all about FIFA 22 gameplay. FIFA lead gameplay producer Sam Rivera, gameplay producer Shaun Pejic, gameplay director Kantcho Doskov and global community manager Gabe Zaro are on set to discuss.

Watch the video below as the team specifically talks about HyperMotion Technology, full team authentication, tactical AI, kinetic air battles, composed ball control, player humanization and other gameplay features.

The Standard Edition of FIFA 22 releases on October 1, but fans that pre-order the Ultimate Edition will get it on September 27. FIFA 22 early access arrives for EA Play subscribers on September 22.

Of note, HyperMotion is exclusive to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Google Stadia, so it appears PC users will once again be left out.

  1. Yes, it's pretty safe to say that from what they showed, I am not impressed.. All the gameplay mechanics they brag about, doesn't actually look that good when they show gameplay of it in my opinion. I facepalmed when they talked about the defending and defending as a unit and all that. Especially when they highlighted the back four moving together, but the midfield neglecting the attacking players again. As if defending in football is all done by the back four..
There was however a moment when they showed the "testing" gameplay with red and blue players where I noticed both midfielders defending in the box during an attack. Fingers crossed!
One thing that I think looked better was the goalkeeping animations. It looked much smoother and natural. Let's just hope the goalkeepers are a bit smarter this year.
    Midfielders do NOT track back.
If you see them sprinting back there are only 2 reasons:
    1) The midfielder is well... selected / user controlled.
    2) This is the tricky one: The attackers are already through & running at the backline / beyond the backline and the defenders have to keep up and are dropping deep. This is what triggers the midfielders to sprint back, to keep up with the defenders and maintain a certain distance. But until that happens they will happily stand still and let anyone through without marking or following him. They're sprinting back to "keep shape", not to defend.
The rough looking footage they showed today should also silence any thoughts that this game has a new engine... some of those clips looked like FIFA 19. The game may have 4000 new animations but hypermotion is just a cute word for the back of the box right now.

After reviewing the videos, I came to the same conclusion.. It's like they have a "fixed" shape they have to be in. So when they are running back, it's to keep the shape they have with the defenders. And it doesn't seem like they pay any attention to opposing players at all, they are not tracking anything other than keeping the shape with the defenders. While I do believe that is better than last year, it's still totally unacceptable.
And to me this doesn't look like a true next gen game, I think the players still act very "robot" like. and while some of the new animations look better, it's still very, very underwhelming.
I'm sure there will be issues but for me, it looks like a very solid leap forward. Personally I was less concerned with the CDM issue and more concerned with the lack of intensity at times on defense.
Like, that pic above may look bad but I think we have to be super careful about making calls with just a single screen shot. For example, look at the first screenshot below, taken just seconds prior to the one in OP thread. Pretty much everyone is in position.
Philly's screenshot looks bad because one human player cuts inside with the attacker and the other player doesn't respond properly. If he'd switched to his CDM to cover, all would be well. I mean, at some point we do have to expect the human player to... play defense.
Meanwhile, have a look at that second screen shot. Defense is in a 433 and you've got the CDM and two CMs coming back into the box to defend. That... rarely happened before.
Then, one of the biggest gripes has been that midfield wingers wouldn't track back and get goal side. Thankfully that looks fixed! In the third screenshot, you see both LM and RM in the correct spot. Finally!
Then in the fourth, you see all four midfielders (it's a 442) not just dropping to outside the box - which is pretty much as far back as they'd go previously - but they actually come back into the box the defend. That's also something we haven't seen and great news.
So, yeah, there's surely going to be issues. FIFA is designed to be more attack oriented for the market. But IMO, this looks very much improved so far.
You can see what you want to see... I took a screenshot because it represented what is shown in the GIF on their website and what was shown multiple times throughout the broadcast today. Obviously a screenshot is not going to capture the whole sequence, but it's indicative of a problem that can clearly be seen by anyone casually watching that broadcast.
If you want to believe they've fixed it that's certainly your choice. I would love for this to be an anomaly because I'm rooting for the game to be good. I know some people love to hate on FIFA and prop up PES but that's not where I'm coming from. I have 0 interested in PES.
But pretending like the biggest issue from 21 isn't still present in these clips seems a bit dishonest...
Like last year, it seems like speed and through balls will be OP. Look at this.. It's like the defender is out taking a casual stroll while an attacking player is through on goal.. Absolutely horrendous. The defense should be at full sprint to close him down.

Maybe it's because I'm born and raised in DC and genetically hardcoded to rage whenever I see the Eagles logo, but I'm not really sure how to respond to a response like that. With all due respect, either we're having a discussion or not. No idea why you'd need to go about claiming I'm being dishonest. Dishonest... about what now? I mean, good lord, few people have bashed this game as much as I have over the last decade for the poor AI and defending.
Forgive me for trying to be a little optimistic after the awful last couple years with this game, and there is potential in those images I posted of improvement, especially with the midfield wingers tracking back. Meanwhile, the CDM issue is more complicated and I'm honestly not sure what the screenshot you posted is meant to prove.
I know the gif you're referring to, and yes that was concerning. But without knowing tactics and instructions and difficulty settings, the pic you posted isn't all that terribly egregious. There's no major gaps, all players are relatively where they should be. Even with sliders, you'd struggle to recreate that solidity in defense in FIFA21. Rather than pressuring the ball carrier or tracking the run, the human defender is controlling his attacker for goodness sakes - that's probably the biggest fail of that image!
FIFA 21 had two major macro issues with defensive tactics - horrible in transition and poor with their positions once the defense is set. Like what's posted by Hillmoe above (and what I meant by lack of intensity; prob not the best description), the transitional intelligence is a bigger concern. Meanwhile, the positions when set looks to be improved and that's really all we can tell from static images like you and I posted.
I'm sure there will be issues. Just don't think your harsh judgement is warranted this early, from seeing so little, without actually playing it. Yes, I'm trying to be a little optimistic here, maybe naively so. Got nothing to do with dishonesty/honesty; keep the attacks to yourself.

I'm not attacking you lol chill out. You can call it "optimism" all you want but the CDM issue is clearly in the majority of the footage they've shown for FIFA 22 if you're looking at it objectively. If you want to believe that it's not going to be in the final product, that's great. But ignoring that it's clearly in the footage they're showing now is just silly because we can all see it.

Eyes will be on what PES brings to the table when the info and possible trailer drop tomorrow*

I will say that PES trailer has me much more excited about FIFA 22 lol. That was rough.

Finally, something I can totally agree with. I am right there with you bro. Game looks amazing, the animations, player movement and the boost feature is leagues better than last year. When you watch the the footage, you can see the way the player moved in those Corners and its way improved. The goalie animations are better also. I love the way Mbappe moved and dribbled around those players and shot the ball, almost shed a tear, how improved that was from last year. The players on field giving direction, how they were no longer just sticks like in 21. Great. That Goalie footage, OMG.
As far as the defense, sorry but I have been playing since Fifa 17, play online and play on Ultimate Difficulty. The AI can only do so much, as a player its YOUR responsibility to switch players fast enough and actually play defense. If you play online alot you will see the really good players personally always control the defender and goalie. if you sit there and expect the Ai to defend like a player, thats why your failing to win. When im playing online, I switch like mad around and even switch to play the keeper. Its my job to defend, not the computer. Its the same with all sports games.
I get tired of all the negativity, its like people just look to complain about things. If you are unhappy, simple, GO play PES and dont buy it. I already preordered it and im excited. But harsh negative posts like some of these serve zero purpose. If your going to criticize, provide actual constructive criticism, not straight bashing like some of these posts, just sad.
In closing, Every single sports game has issues, all of them. Madden, 2k, NHL, MLB, they are all imperfect. Stop trying to find fault and just enjoy the game. I play 2k and I can list the issues with it, same with Madden. Lets just stop being negative and enjoy the game. The devs are trying and I respect that.. Perfect post bro

Hey if you're excited for the game, that's awesome. But I see that you play fifa online, and that means that you will probably have a totally different experience playing this game than me. I am a career mode player. I have never played an online game on fifa my entire life. And i've played every fifa since fifa 2003.
Listen, I have no problem defending with my team, the problem is that the opposition AI is terrible. Which makes it easy for me to score a lot of goals no matter what difficulty I play at, and that makes the game less enjoyable and less rewarding.
I would like the game to be as realistic as possible when it comes to gameplay, and I have absolutely zero interest playing online against other players.
My greatest wish for fifa is that they just make seperate gameplay mechanics for offline and online players, to please both parties. Unfortunately, i'm pretty sure that will never happen.

I understand your point bro and like what you Saudi just give the game time. Remember this footage is soo early and I guarantee they will tweek it a ton between now and releasing the game. My thing is once the game is fully released then judge it. For now it’s just like crappy show and tell lol, doesn’t prove anything till release lol.

You can see what you want to see...

Surely the same applies to you?
I also think early signs show some improvement. I saw the first Liverpool clip and thought the same as you - nothing has been fixed. The two clips after that were much better and the player's behaviour looked pretty much as it should.
By no means does it look perfect, but it looks promising to me.
