FIFA 21 Career Mode Trailer and Plenty of Details Revealed

EA continues providing plenty of details for current-gen FIFA 21.  Today, they revealed their career mode trailer and a new Pitch Notes article, diving into their new interactive match sim, player development, active training, schedule planning, overhauled position AI, new transfer options and much more.

INTERACTIVE MATCH SIM

A whole new way to play out your season. Jump in and out of gameplay during matches to control the outcome of the match, change the course of a game by controlling key moments like penalties and free kicks, and make changes directly from the sim as you monitor your players’ performance levels and the match stats.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Enjoy more control over your players’ growth in FIFA 21. New position training lets you turn marauding right backs into right wingers, goal-scoring midfielders into false 9s, and more, while new development plans let you focus your squad’s development in the areas you want to match your team’s style of play.

MATCH SHARPNESS AND ACTIVE TRAINING

Get more insight into your squad’s performance levels with match sharpness, a new attribute that indicates how likely your players are to perform in the most crucial moments during the course of a game. Increase sharpness with a new Active Training System that gives you the ability to set up group training sessions to improve the likelihood of your strikers putting big chances away, or of defenders making the key tackles that make the difference between winning and losing.

SCHEDULE PLANNING

Plan your team’s training schedule with a new activity management system. Decide when to train and when to rest during the week as you balance your players’ sharpness with morale and fitness to keep your team firing on all cylinders.

OVERHAULED OPPOSITION AI

Enhanced opposition AI sees opponents approach games with more intelligence in both defence and attack. New systems create more informed AI decision-making in marking, tackling, passing and dribbling to present you with more challenges during each match, keeping your Career fresh from game to game.

NEW TRANSFER OPTIONS

Enhanced transfer realism provides both human and AI-controlled teams with new ways to sign players. Make Loan to Buy offers with future transfer fees to secure new talent for your team, and respond to AI manager-initiated player swap proposals as you look to bolster your squad each transfer window.

The article covers a lot with plenty of example gifs of gameplay, so make sure to give it a read. Also of note, the @EAFIFADirect Twitter account answered many questions throughout the day, so make sure to check the feed.

FIFA 21 is scheduled to release on October 9 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If you pre-order the FIFA 21 Ultimate Edition or Champions Edition you can play 3 days earlier, on October 6.

EA Access members can get a head start on the season by jumping into the FIFA 21 early access trial starting October 1. During this time, members will also have the opportunity to participate in pre-launch challenges to unlock exclusive bonuses.

Similar to the free upgrade for Madden NFL 21, fans of FIFA 21 can also upgrade FIFA 21 from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, or Xbox One to Xbox Series X, through Dual Entitlement.

  1. This all looks good if there’s no game breaking bugs at launch like last year.
Also, didn’t see anything about the player potential and progression system. I hope it was tweaked so that AI players progress the same as human players.

Like was already said as long as it all works then it should be all good. Hopefully they had someone actually test the changes this year. Would say I'm still neutral at this point. Everything looks good but if it doesn't work out the gate and is poorly executed and requires a ton of patches then its a failure. Can't have another instance of 2 months with an unplayable game mode.
Just read on the twitter Q&A:
We added more countries where you can send your Youth Scout to, such as Wales, Ukraine, Serbia, Albania, the Baltics, and more.
The database of names to pick from for Youth Players has increased to over 5000 first names and 8000 last names.
Pre-match screen finally displays opponents formation/starting 11. Helpful.
I don't sim many, if any, matches but the interactive simulation adds a lot. Being able to jump in/out is a great feature, especially if you play longer matches (I prefer 15 minute halves). Also there have been a few times I wanted to start a new career and sim ahead in the season. This at least makes that easier to do while still adjusting lineups and even making subs for preseason or dead-rubber European matches later in the season... play the kids!
XP-fueled growth can be focused on weak foot/skills and work rates as well as attributes!
Player position conversion!!! I need to stop and take a deep breath.
Yeah, I've regained my composure and finished the deep dive article. Strict negotiations, established youth academy, tweaking morale/form, and the new fitness/sharpness system. I'm sure it will need some balancing and some old warts will remain, but EA really put some work into CM for this year. I will gladly take this end of generation dead cat bounce.
With the caveat that it needs to be functional, as someone that plays both FIFA and Madden, it's beyond frustrating that FIFA has gotten to such a great point and Madden hasn't done that.
With the amount of changes across all the game modes (sorry pro clubs and player career) this reinforces in my mind that they threw in the towel early on FIFA 20 and that all the work was being focused on the the transition to next gen. Assuming my previous statement was true this would also give a good reason to moving to an every other year model. The need for completely new sports games every year is no longer necessary since we can get patches/updates via the internet.
I'm still not pre-ordering and it's debatable if this is a day 1 purchase. Depends on what those that get that 3 day early access say. Still the changes listed are all positives and I see nothing to complain about from what they've listed. There are a couple things I don't think they bothered fixing that seemed like low hanging fruit but we'll see if they got addressed.
Not that impressed. Match Sim and the transfer stuff is things they've taken out of the game before so they can add them back in later like a new feature (as they've done in Madden), the training things is cool and then the gameplay AI thing applies to any offline match in any game mode so doesn't really have a lot to do with career mode.

    It's overwhelming right?!
I don't usually simulate many games either, but I don't usually make it that far into career modes either. I think the addition of the interactive SIM option will probably encourage me to SIM a few more games and give a little more longevity to my career modes, which is good.
I barely watch football anymore but I'm far more excited for this FIFA than I've been in years.
Seriously hope they fixed the player editing, this year. Having to go in, pick the country, then the team, then find the player you're looking for each time you edited someone absolutely BLEW. Plus, it took away the players secondary positions. Also, hope we can finally create/edit players to be a CM, CF, LW, RW, LWB, and RWB. I still don't understand how they've been missing this.

Last night I finished the final match of my second season in my CM. Played every match, including preseason, Euro 2020 (which I won with Switzerland, haha), and making to the Quarterfinals of the Europa League in year two. And this is on 15 minute halves for nearly every match. Easily the most I've played through a CM in years.
After a second look, it appears the interactive sim plays at twice the speed of a played match. I wonder if that's scaled to your half lengths, or if they use the default (6 min?) as a baseline. Because half the speed of my 15/half matches is still about 20 minutes to sim, although I concede I spend more time in menus than most probably do.
Anyway, I can see using the interactive sim in certain situations like I said before. In both of my seasons I was fighting for European places right down to the wire, but what if I am decidedly mid-table with five matches to go and no chance of Europe or relegation? Perfect time to control the lineups/subs but still knock those matches out much quicker to move on to the next season. I tend to play a lot for a week or two then take a long break, so anything that keeps me from losing interest or momentum could help me get deeper into a career.

This was from the Q&A they did on twitter yesterday.
I must say I’m really looking forward to this now, finally they’ve put some thought and effort behind CM. I’ve also just been given a Closed Beta code for CM the first time ever so will hopefully dive into it tonight and see what’s what!
There are a lot of improvements and im actually impressed for once with EA.
My only gripe, came when I read, that in FUT, you have upgradable stadiums.
That has been a wish of career mode players for almost s decade. Maybe it is in career mode, but you'd figure they would have mentioned it.
At the moment it's 3 steps forward, and 1 step back if they give FUT stadium upgrades and not career mode. I assume it's monetized in some way....cash is king.

I wonder if it's a licensing thing (upgradeable stadiums) for those authentic stadiums. But yeah, no reason why you shouldn't be able to upgrade the generic stadiums in CM.

This was one of the first things I checked for in the beta. It hasn't been changed. Hopefully they will address this in the retail version because it's very aggravating.
Legitimately impressed by the love Career Mode got this year. Hope it all works properly. I left FIFA for PES for the first time this past year and was really impressed by it, but I'll have to keep an eye on this to see if it warrants giving FIFA another try.

So no offline customization additions or mode enhancements then? Everything is just for FUT players?
So how did you arrive at the conclusion that there haven't been any enhancements to CM.

    I know right!
There are more CM changes coming this year than I ever have seen with FIFA.
I’m working on Part 3 to add some Q&A the FIFA team did with the community.
    So much promise

Not a conclusion just a question. Ive been a casual player past few years, Im not sure which modes are online only, seems like most are. I stopped paying attention to this series when they went all in on Ultimate Team, and got rid of offline customization and team creation. Is that back now?
