Ex-Formula 1 driver arrested in international operation, and his falling out with Lewis Hamilton was one of paddock's most bitter feuds

This feud destroyed an F1 friendship

Former Formula 1 driver Adrian Sutil has been arrested in an international raid over fraud and embezzlement claims. The 42-year-old German driver has been detained. Sutil has not made any public comments about the allegations.

Sutil raced in F1 for eight seasons with teams like Spyker, Force India, and Sauber from 2007 to 2014. But many fans remember him more for his bitter feud with Lewis Hamilton than for his racing. That falling out remains one of the most talked-about personal splits in the paddock’s recent history.

According to Daily Mail, the trouble started in 2011 in Shanghai. Sutil was involved in an incident at a nightclub where Lotus team executive Eric Lux was injured with a champagne glass. Hamilton was Sutil’s best friend on the grid at the time and was also at the club. Hamilton had no involvement in the incident itself.

The courtroom verdict shattered their friendship

Sutil was found guilty of grievous bodily harm in 2012. He received an 18-month suspended sentence and a fine. He briefly left the sport after the trial but returned with Force India in 2013.

The real drama happened away from the courtroom. Sutil and Hamilton had been very close since their days as teammates in F3. But the incident broke them apart. Hamilton was called as a witness but refused to testify on Sutil’s behalf. Much like how Bill Belichick avoided questions about controversy, Hamilton also changed his phone number without telling Sutil, cutting off all contact.

This led Sutil to publicly attack his former friend. He called Hamilton a “coward” for not standing up for him during the trial.

Sutil said he wasn’t looking for friends in the sport. He noted that he had fixed the main issue, saying, “Basically I only had a problem with one person, which was Mr Lux. He has offered me his hand and said that for him, the issue is finished.”

Sutil also said Hamilton’s actions didn’t matter for his career goals. He explained, “What Lewis Hamilton does is not decisive for my ambitions to get back to Formula One. Just as with defeats, you have to deal with disappointments, it’s as simple as that.” He added that no one should expect to find friends in the paddock.

Hamilton later admitted in 2013 that their relationship had changed forever. He said, “Things are different, definitely.” He also wanted to reconnect, noting they had been great friends for a long time. Despite the drama, Sutil had a solid F1 career.

He finished fourth in the 2009 Italian Grand Prix and fifth in the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix and 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. Tensions between drivers aren’t uncommon in racing, as seen when Max Verstappen exploded on team radio recently. He holds a unique record: the most career starts without a podium finish, with 128 races. As the investigation continues, Sutil’s name is back in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
