EA Sports PGA TOUR Delayed

EA announced today they are delaying EA Sports PGA TOUR and will provide more information on launch plans in the coming months. While no official release date was ever given, the team mentioned in their official FAQ (which has now been removed) it would release in spring 2022 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

No explanation was given for the delay, but you can bet the ongoing pandemic has something to do with it. If EA provides any additional details we will update this post.

EA Sports PGA TOUR is the exclusive home of all four of golf’s major championships: Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open Championship, and The Open. In addition to playing the major championships, golf fans can build a legendary career as they authentically compete at THE PLAYERS Championship in addition to the FedExCup Playoffs, while experiencing the unique atmosphere and venues of each tournament.

Players will also be able to compete at The Amundi Evian Championship, one of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour’s five major championships and will have the opportunity to play as several female athletes as well as create a female golfer of their own in the newly overhauled Create-A-Player feature.

  1. I gotta be honest I did not even know that a release date had been announced. I just expected it would be around spring time as the USP is The Master’s. I’m guessing it will be 2023 release now so I’ll expect a better game with a longer development cycle.

There wasn’t just said spring. You think it will be that far out?
Is this like a 2 month delay like Rory had putting us around July 2022 or a much longer delay putting it around Spring 2023? Who knows. But boy imagine if we got PGA and CFB both in summer 2023.

Im thinking it’s still releasing next year. I feel like it was delayed until ‘23 they would’ve said so. “Shift” to me sounds like a few months rather than a year.

They probably wanted to make sure the leaderboards worked before they put it on shelves.

They can take all the time they need to get this one right. Don't release a half-baked game like Rory. Besides, there's still no firm release date for PGA 2K? at this point either.
The assumption is that PGA 2K23 would come out next August, but neither 2K or HB are saying a darn thing. If 2K follows suit with how they did the release of 2K21, we wouldn't know a new game is coming out until May 2022, if their plan is to release it in August of '22.
I would guess that EA's game is likely going to come out now around US Open time. It's a disappointment that their big front cover highlight - the Masters - will pass by with no new golf game available.

Haha, thank you. What is intrigued about is how long the delay is… If it’s an entire year it gives people way more time to get a ps5 and more profit.
Might just be a few months though. I feel like we will get something around Augusta now. A trailer during the Masters would hold me over.

Sadly, it was predicted by experts a few months ago. I wrote about it at one time, game companies were thinking of delaying to publish their games due to the microchip shortage, not enough customers are able to buy the new generation consoles. So instead of having poor sale numbers, here we are. On the other hand, it will give EA more time to add contents.

I’ll gladly wait if it means a deeper game at launch!

I suppose it's not all that surprising considering it's not actually all that far away from Spring, and we haven't seen even a bullshot screen of the game yet. I am actually leaning toward the 2023 crowd on this, especially considering if they can't get it out by July/August, it's getting to the end of the golf season anyway and they might as well just wait at that point.
As others have said, it's fine with me either way. I doubt I'll have a next-gen system at any point in the next year anyway.

Yep and I refuse to buy anything other than the base PS5 digital for $400 max. Not buying any bogus bundles just to get the system. So it really doesn't matter to me if the game comes out in 2023 or 2022. The availability of the PS5 doesn't seem to be improving at all.
I'm bummed but not surprised to read this. I was figuring on an April release prior to this latest news. I'd like to think it's due to EA taking on a radically new approach to golf gaming and having to take their time with it. The rational side of my brain would guess it's a number of factors: chip shortages, various other supply difficulties, personnel shortages, and general economic uncertainties. My guess now would be next Fall :(

With fifa, Madden, and nhl all pretty much in the same window not sure how pga would fit in. Crossing fingers for May or June.
At this point, if it means a finished, deeper game , I’ll happily wait until April 2023. The last thing we need is an unfinished games with only a few courses.

Would appreciate EA taking their time to get this game right. Some sensible community testing would be amazing & prevent the mistakes that HB have made with gameplay changes post launch.
Little extra time to develop is good thing, but i still dont have very high hopes.
Lets hope its even basic "EA quality", gameplay is fine and also many issues on product.
It is sad. What do you think is the real reason for the delay and postponement? Although if that's what it takes for a better game, I think I can wait a little longer.
It's all about the chip shortage and the inability of enough customers to get their hands on a new generation console. Instead of having a commercial failure, they're delaying the game. Either that or they will rebuilt the game so it can also work with the PS4/XBox One like PGA 2K21.

Define plenty. An ordinary customer still can't go to a store and buy a PS5 or XBox X at Best Buy or Walmart. Sony is planning to have built less than 15 millions by end of March. Worldwide, that's peanuts and bots are buying just about everything right now. I doubt I'll have a PS5 by end of 2022.

Not enough to make the sales numbers they will need with this release. They need every single person who wants this game to have next gen in their hands.
Not just, "plenty of us on Operation Sports have them."
I don't foresee it being released until people can go into a store and buy one on demand rather than having to hunt and search for one.

I agree. Why would they rush a game out on platforms that were not readily available? I can't find a PS5 going the usual routes and I won't pay over MSRP in this life. The graphic jump just isn't enough gen to gen anymore. This is now the third gen that is HD. Once I find a digital only PS5 for $400 I am in. No bundles.

    Same..
And I'm not spending time on lists or rushing to some website and hoping to get through, etc -- screw all of that.
I think EA is smart enough to realize that the target market for a PGA game is largely all in this same camp.

Im going to be 100% honest. That doesn't matter. At all.
What do game sales look like compared to console sales... If 13mil consoles were sold but a lot are hoarded and people still cant buy in stores on-demand, then that 13mil probably doesn't tell you the whole picture.
Nobody is hunting down a PS5 or XSX, whatever the cost, just to play the newest EA PGA game.
    ^^You are exactly right.
If 2k isn't working on a nex gen advancement for the current PGA Tour 2k21, and just working on fixing stuff and some other enhancements (I'll still buy it on opening day if that's all it is), then they would be very wise to release whatever they have by early spring. EA is very wise to wait until just about anyone can get a PS5, and has had one for awhile.
It would be dumb for them to rush their game and release it in the Spring just to get it out there before the Masters.

I'd make it 3 if I didn't already have a Series X. I think they could easily make a game that would play to both generations though. The PS4 and XBox One versions could run at 1080p, while the PS5 and Series X/S versions could run at 4K and 1440p, respectively, at 60 FPS with other advanced graphics options in effect, like ray tracing on the current gen. I really think that would be the best solution for all.

Bad wording, so I updated my post. Volt, you already admitted as such that you're waiting until its simple to get one. And even if you were willing to hunt for one on every site or pay upcharge just to have one, OS doesn't represent EAs overall target audience. People stress out about getting a new console to play Halo or Spidey... Not EA PGA Tour. Those games can afford to release whenever they want, because people buy the console just to play the game on time, tens of thousands. There's probably under 200 people who would buy a console just to play this game on time.

I'm going to wait and see the reviews for the game in this forum and online. If the game gets really good reviews which I certainly hope it does, then I'll buy the PS5 just for it as well. The only other game I can even think of for the PS5 is The Show. Everything else that I'm interested in I can play on the PC.
Yeah it's kind of crazy to buy a console for basically one game, but that's how much I want a really good next gen golf game...
    jbd345
Maybe just maybe they delayed to port over to ps4 and x1 too? Just a thought.

That's an interesting thought as that would solve all of the above mentioned concerns but if that's the case I wouldn't imagine them delaying next gen but instead announcing a later release for current gen.
Yeah after all this is EA we're talking about. I changed my mind I hope it comes out for previous gen. Not buying a 4K TV unless I need a new box and I am not buying a new console for just one game. My gaming habits are not what they used to be no need for me to rush out and try to get a PS5. I might just wait for a sale like I did with the PS4. As for this game there is no rush the Masters is 4 months away.
After owning a Series X for some time it’s really not that much of an upgrade over One X.
Frame rates aside the games look very similar.

Maybe the game just isn’t in a fit state to be ready for release?
Not that it’s stopped them before…

Announcing games before an ounce of data is plugged into a computer seems to the way triple a studios do things now a days.
Better that they set expectations early rather than announce 2 weeks before release for delay.
Regardless of the reasons, the game will be out whenever EA determines...some folks will find it to be great and others will hate it. They will be bashed for delaying and leaving out x or y in the game...that we can count on.
I am just glad they are back in the golf game business. The more choices the better.

Yes, Golf games hold up pretty well, if this game has enough content and doesn’t require online it doesn’t matter of EA ever does another golf game, I will have Augusta and all the majors and courses I need for years to come.

I used to be a big fan of EA many moons ago but they have managed to produce two stale representations of their respective sports the past decade or so. Their hockey and football games are trash. Their last effort in the golf space was mediocre at best. Why would anyone expect anything ground shaking out of them now? Seriously I am hoping for the best but what do you really think they are about now?

I know many wouldn't like this, and they likely wouldn't do it as the initial reviews would be problematic (Ala Rory)..
..but I would take a limited content earlier release if it were an option.
(but I know it's not, especially since they'll be a disc release that needs to be fairly complete and content rich)
It bums me out this isn't coming to PC where they could theoretically most easily be running a beta program as things developed. I really wish/hope they are planning some phase of Beta to help ensure they don't screw this all up again -- again, like Rory.
Basically I'm just talking out loud and sharing my disappointment.

Doing something around the Masters make sense but they can only get away with releasing bits and pieces for so long. When they eventually do release it needs to be close to the finished package content wise or it will be Rory 2.0.

Another few weeks maybe, but I think the concern is that the game might be a full year away still even when The Masters comes along
I wish we had more insight into the reason for the delay.
Is it about the game itself? Licensing stuff? Time to build out more courses? Just waiting on next gen consoles to be more readily available?
It's really hard to predict this situation without knowing more about the reason for the delay

At this point I’m assuming Covid. Not getting everyone in the studio for mo cap, and travel restrictions for Not getting courses mapped as quick if everything were open.
Maybe EA wants to put it into 2023 so they will have a monster year releasing two new titles in PGA Tour with The Master and the first College FB game in 10 years.

I can't imagine we won't get either 2k23 or the EA game before Christmas. Maybe 2k will do an August release like they did with 2k21. I still play 2k21 almost every day after more than a year of having it. I love it, especially playing online with friends. Tour mode is definitely stale at this point, it was lacking so much depth to begin with. I find myself playing more high stakes Skins matches when I have to play by myself.
I'm really looking forward to the next 2 games. I don't want to wait anymore! If either one of them gets it right, the game should provide a couple of years of daily fun and challenge. I'm cool with one coming out every 2 years after these come out, if they are good. Just tired of waiting, especially not getting any updates or information on what to expect and when.

I would rather wait for the EA game simply because i think if it flips like Rory, EA will effectively be finished and hold the majors rights as long as they can even if they did not publish any new games for 2-3 years like they did with EA NCAA BB.
I’d rather then get it right so the game sells great and makes EA want to make another in game after.
I’m very excited to see what 2K/HB have been up to, I’m expecting a bit of a major step in graphics and the PGA aspect of it with Tiger on the cover. Hopefully both are hits!

Well stated Volt, as usual. I for one, will buy both games the day they come out lol. If 2k keeps the ball physics, the swing mechanics pretty much like they are now, all they have to do to make me happy is keep course creator and all of the currently available courses, and improve the graphics and Tour mode. Just those basic things and I will be happy with that game for the next couple of years.
EA has a lot more going on, a lot more to prove, and a lot more chances to really screw it up. All of the licensing, courses and exclusives they have, playing as pros (which I'm not really interested in but it's cool to have), none of that stuff will matter if they release a wonky gameplay experience. The choices of how you shoot, the execution of any or all of of those options, the way shooting and putting feels, the mechanics and physics of the ball and the courses, is everything.
If EA gets that part of it as least as good as 2k is now, plus all of the majors, etc, and the inevitable graphics and course additions, it will be the greatest golf game ever created.
I can't wait for both of them and will jump the day they are released.
