Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green recently spoke openly about a desire he has held for years: the chance to share an NBA court with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. According to Newsweek, Green explained that this wish didn’t stem from a desire to switch teams, but from genuine curiosity about what it would be like to work alongside one of basketball’s most accomplished players.
Green, a four-time NBA champion with the Warriors, has never played in the same professional locker room as James, despite both stars being prominent figures in the league for well over a decade. The two men have faced off in some of the most memorable playoff battles of the 2010s, most notably during the stretch when Green’s Warriors squared off with James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in four straight NBA Finals from 2015 through 2018.
Green said that his interest in playing with James is rooted in respect rather than a desire to leave his current situation. “I’ve always wanted to [play with him],” Green said. “Saying I wanted to go to his team, that’s not the case. I’m very comfortable in my situation with Stephen Curry and what we’ve built and what we have,” he said.
Green Says Curry Wants To Team With LeBron
Green, who recently revealed his Rookie of the Year pick, noted that James and his teammate, Stephen Curry, had the chance to play together on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, an experience Green found intriguing and meaningful. “I think him and Steph shared the want to take the court together, and they got the opportunity to do that in the Olympics in Paris,” Green explained.
He elaborated that the draw of teaming up with James, who was recently selected to the All-Star Game, was not about ego or legacy but about understanding decision-making and basketball thought processes. “I’ve always wanted the opportunity, just to experience it, to see how he thinks, to see, all right, what I could do to help him and his thinking,” Green said. “Or what can I learn and pick up about what he’s thinking.”
Green’s acknowledgment of this wish comes amid a period of uncertainty for both him and James. The Warriors have explored major trade possibilities, including proposals that might involve Green moving elsewhere to acquire a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo. At the same time, James is nearing the end of an exceptionally long and accomplished career with the Lakers. Reports indicate he may be entering free agency this offseason, raising questions about his long-term plans with Los Angeles or elsewhere.
Even as the trade landscape remains unpredictable, Green was candid about the likelihood of them ending up as teammates. “I don’t see a path to it,” he said. For Green, the appeal is as much about intellectual engagement with basketball as it is about playing in big games.
The respect between the two players appears to be mutual, at least publicly. James, now in his 20th season, is widely regarded as one of the most cerebral players in NBA history, someone who approaches the sport with both physical skill and strategic thought. Green, known for his defensive intensity and high basketball IQ, seems to value the opportunity to explore the game’s intellectual side up close.
Off the court, Green and James have cultivated a friendly relationship, including shared time away from basketball and positive public comments about each other. This friendship stands in sharp contrast to the intense competition they once brought to their Finals matchups, highlighting how rivalries can evolve over time into mutual admiration.
