Defending Champion Japan Exits WBC Early After Loss to Venezuela, And Shohei Ohtani Apologized for His Part in the Defeat

Ohtani could not hide his disappointment.

Japan’s title defense at the 2026 World Baseball Classic ended in surprising fashion. The defending champions were eliminated earlier than expected, suffering a tough loss to Venezuela. A team that entered the tournament with high expectations, pressured by and the weight of its 2023 championship, failed to deliver, falling short 8-5 in the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Japan showed early promise, even matching firepower in the opening innings, where MLB stars Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna, Jr, hit the leadoff runs for their respective teams. However, the defending champs failed to sustain their offense, going cold at the plate during crucial stretches. It did not help that Venezuela mounted a comeback and seized control midway through the game before sealing the victory in the final inning.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ohtani took to social media to express his appreciation to their fans while also praising Japan’s efforts. He also gave his props to the solid Venezuelan team. However, he expressed disappointment in his performance during the game. “Thank you to all the fans for your support. Your cheers pushed us forward every day. We didn’t achieve the results we hoped for, and I deeply regret my own shortcomings,” he wrote on Instagram.

Ohtani’s Disappointment Was Palpable

With Venezuela leading 8-5 and one out left in the bottom of the ninth inning, the fate of Japan once again rested on Ohtani’s shoulders. Unlike in their Finals battle against Team USA, this time he was not on the mound. He was not allowed to pitch. He hit a foul ball on the first pitch before drawing two balls in the next two. However, when he made contact with the ball, he flied out, ending the game and Japan’s WBC run.

It makes sense why the four-time MVP’s disappointment was palpable. “All I can say is that it’s frustrating…It was a close game, a game where we had our chances. It’s not like they completely overwhelmed us. We had our moments to win but didn’t take them,” Ohtani said via Olympics.com.

Although Ohtani said he enjoyed the competition, for him, this WBC run counts as a failure. “It’s been a fantastic experience but anything other than a championship would have to be considered failure for us. Because that’s what everyone was working for – the manager, coaches, the staff,” he admitted. For now, he will focus on the next World Baseball Classic.

Meanwhile, after defeating Italy in the semifinal, Venezuela is preparing for its finals clash against Team USA. President Donald Trump expressed his admiration and praise for the team.
