Dave Portnoy, the well-known executive and massive Patriots fan, tried to call out Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy this week, but his plan completely backfired. Portnoy attempted to shame the Hall of Fame voter for not being transparent about Bill Belichick’s reported snub. Instead, fans quickly labeled him a “keyboard tough guy.”
According to the Daily Mail, the drama started when news broke that Bill Belichick, one of the most successful coaches in NFL history and an eight-time Super Bowl champion, will reportedly not be added to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. This shocked Patriots Nation and football fans everywhere. People wanted to know which of the 50 total voters denied the coaching legend.
Tony Dungy, a Super Bowl champion himself and now a network football analyst, is one of those 50 voters. Reporters caught up with Dungy at the Super Bowl’s radio row and pressed him hard about his ballot. Dungy refused to clarify his vote, saying the results weren’t even officially released yet.
Dungy defended the voting process and refused to break the rules
Dungy explained his reasoning to reporters and defended the secrecy of the voting process. “First of all, we don’t know that they didn’t get inducted into the Hall of Fame. I am a voter, I have not heard who’s in and who’s out. So I’m not going to make a comment on it and speculate.” he stated. When reporters asked if he voted for Belichick or Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who was also reportedly denied, Dungy refused to comment.
This lack of transparency drove Portnoy, a diehard Massachusetts native, wild. He took to his personal social media page and publicly called the coaching legend a “COWARD.” If you’re going to use that kind of language against an NFL icon, you better be prepared for the return fire, and Portnoy definitely got it. Similar to recent NBA All-Star Game announcements, sports fans had strong reactions to the news.
The commenters didn’t hold back and immediately ripped the executive for his tough-guy stance. Many users defended Dungy’s integrity and character, pointing out that he was just following the rules of the Hall of Fame voting process.
One account posted a sharp reply, saying, “How is refusing to comment until the Thursday night announcement is made being a coward? He’s abiding by the Hall’s rules. Just because others are talking doesn’t mean it’s right for him. Coach is all about integrity — unlike you, apparently.”
The most memorable response came from a user who posted, “lol you love calling people out on twitter. Keyboard tough guy.” That label is hard to shake off when you’re attacking someone for simply following the Hall of Fame’s internal rules. In other sports news, Draymond Green discussed playing with LeBron and his future plans.
