Damian Lillard is the NBA 2K21 Cover Athlete For Current Gen Systems, Who Are the Other Two Cover Athletes?

It’s Dame Time. 2K has announced Damian Lillard, as the current gen NBA 2K21 cover athlete, along with a one minute, “Everything is Dame” video.

Introducing our NBA 2K21 Cover Athlete for Current Gen, Damian Lillard. Whether he’s draining shots from the logo, taking it to the rack, or nailing a buzzer beater, few players can take over a game today like Dame.

2K will reveal the other two NBA 2K21 cover athletes, over the next couple of days. Feel free to make your guesses.

  1. According to the 2K twitter account hes the cover athlete for current gen. So perhaps Zion for next gen and Kobe as a legend edition cover on both gens.
People have to remember they would have needed vanessa's permission to put Kobe on the cover and she's made it clear that the family still struggles to see media of him. So if it doesn't happen hopefully everyone leaves it alone.

Exactly. I also wouldn't feel comfortable with if they tried to make a profit off of his death.
They did add Kobe content into MyTeam. I think it took longer than most were expecting so it made me believe that 2k was able to reach some agreement with the family regarding using Kobe's likeness.

Yeah. You guys are right. It’s not time for a kobe cover yet. I’d
Completely understand if the family said no right now.
    Zion for next gen.
VC for the legends cover ???
Just being speculative here, but in the Current Gen Cover Athlete trailer that 2K released I found it a bit odd that they used the TNT footage from Dame's game winning 3 vs the Thunder. Usually, they would edit out the scorebug or use footage from a different angle to not include that.
    I like the cover.
Zion for next gen would be cool.
Gotta admit a VC cover in a vintage Raptors jersey would be pretty sweet for the legend.
Way too soon for a Kobe cover. There is a big difference between game content and being on the cover. A few years from now would be better. I can't see his family being ok with him being on the cover this soon.

Something I was wondering about too. Glad I'm not the only one reading into it a little bit.

If anything If Kobe is on the cover half of the money or some % goes to charity

Kobe as the cover athlete on the most expensive version of the game this year would feel incredibly crass. should be Vince.
most sensible thing to do would be to wait a few years and go all-in with a Kobe cover and greatest games mode like with Jordan in 2K11.

If this ends up being what you're thinking, I'm gonna come back to this post to congratulate you on being an FBI detective. I honestly didn't even notice, but it makes total sense!
I must be in the minority. I don't see nothing wrong or inappropiate with having Kobe on the Legends addition. Yeah, 2KSports would probably make extra profit by default, but that's just business. Honestly, I would prefer it be this year than years down the road.

Yeah, I think it would be dope to celebrate the Mamba for the next year provided his family is cool with it.

    As a fan, yes. I’m 100% down.
But the human, family aspect it’s probably not time yet.
I'll be astonished if it's Kobe. Guy just died 5 months ago. Way too soon for that. You can celebrate Kobe in-game if you want (give everyone a free Kobe jersey or something), but plastering his face on a cover to sell a more expensive version of a video game seems hilariously out of touch and kinda gross.
My guess is Kevin Garnett. Tim Duncan is too boring and they probably didn't know Vince Carter was going to retire in time to put him on a Legends cover.

Way too soon for whom? I would like to think they would reach out to the family/estate first out of respect. If anything, they would have to. Do you know how much backlash they would get if they used his image, and Vanessa came out and said that she never gave permission to do so?

Does GettyImages have pictures of Kobe Bryant? Personally I think it’s all about money, she (Vanessa) wants to be able to control the narrative so if 2k uses him on cover, I’m sure they would ask but I don’t see why other then courteous.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think they may have to legally. He retired in 2016, and I thought video games can only use their likeness for only 2-3 more years after their retirement. I forgot the details.
