DHS official Corey Lewandowski had announced earlier that Super Bowl LX would be prone to ICE raids. He was sure that his department would be unstoppable in conducting its business as usual. “There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people who are in the country illegally, not the Super Bowl, not anywhere else.”
Contrary to their claims, the Chief Security Officer of the NFL has come forward to clarify the league’s stance regarding the same. According to ESPN, Cathy Lanier confirmed that Super Bowl LX’s security will be the same as the previous years’. “There are no planned ICE enforcement activities. We are confident of that,” Lanier said in a security briefing, shutting down any ideas that ICE might have.
Kristi Noem, DHS secretary and the superior of Lewandowski, had also agreed with Lewandowski earlier on. After the NFL’s clarification, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin has refused to comment on the matter. “We will not disclose future operations or discuss personnel,” was her response.
The Super Bowl Headliner’s Words Came True After All
The NFL’s decision to bring Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, ‘Bad Bunny,’ as a Super Bowl headliner was met with a lot of criticism and frustration from ICE. Noem did not like the idea of the league bringing the 2026 Grammy-winning artist to open the Halftime show, owing to his anti-ICE stance and recent words about the DHS.
They suck, and we’ll win, and God will bless us. We’ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day, and they won’t be able to sleep at night because they don’t know what they believe, and they’re so weak. We’ll fix it.
Bad Bunny famously echoed the slogan, “ICE out,” after his album Debí Tirar Más Fotos won the Best Música Urbana Album award. He further explained that he has been unable to conduct any concerts in the United States because of the fear that the ICE would ruin it for him and his fans. “We’re not savage. We’re not animals. We’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans.”
The statements issued by the DHS are still posing a lingering fear in everyone’s mind. As of now, Bad Bunny is set to open the Super Bowl Halftime Show without any interruptions. Although there is no guarantee for President Donald Trump and the DHS’s actions. The only relief comes from San Francisco Mayor, Daniel Lurie, who assured that the event will proceed smoothly.
