Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou didn’t hold back after his team’s 2-1 loss to Fulham. He said fans who booed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario during the match “can’t be true Tottenham fans.” Postecoglou was clearly upset by the crowd’s reaction after Vicario’s costly mistake led to Fulham’s second goal.
While he understands booing after a tough loss, he said supporting the team during play is a must. The Australian told BBC Sport that the fans’ reaction to his goalkeeper was “completely unacceptable.” He stressed that when the team is playing, everyone needs to back each other and support each other.
According to BBC, the incident happened early in the match. Spurs gave up two goals in the first six minutes. Fulham had already taken the lead in the fourth minute through Kenny Tete. Then came the big turning point.
This mistake handed Fulham an empty net from 36 meters out
Vicario came far out of his box to deal with a long ball and carried it toward the touchline. Instead of just kicking the ball out of play, the Italian tried to turn and clear it. He slipped, the ball hit Harry Wilson, and Josh King controlled it. King quickly passed the ball back to Wilson.
Wilson saw an empty net and curled a shot into the goal from 36.6 meters away. That goal was the second longest-range Premier League goal of the season. Former Premier League goalkeeper Joe Hart said the goal was “completely avoidable.” Hart said Vicario is a great team player and leader, but players are judged by their actions.
The booing started moments later when the ball next came to Vicario. The team was booed off at halftime and again at full time after the 2-1 defeat. But it was the booing during the game that Postecoglou objected to most strongly. For fans managing their own squads, building a successful superteam in Football Manager requires better decision-making than what Spurs showed on the pitch.
The 29-year-old Italy international took responsibility right after the game. Vicario told Sky Sports he had to own the error. He said his plan was to clear the ball long, but he “just hit the ball in a bad way.” About the boos, Vicario said it’s part of football and he’s a big man who can handle it.
This loss marks Tottenham’s 10th Premier League home loss of 2025, tying a club record set in 1994 and 2003. They’ve now lost four straight home London derbies for the first time in the Premier League. This poor home form is quickly becoming one of the most embarrassing ongoing streaks in sports this year.
