Bam Adebayo Scored 83 Points in One Night. Suddenly, He’s in the Same Sentence as Kobe Bryant and Wilt Chamberlain.

Bam Adebayo beats Kobe Bryant.

Bam Adebayo delivered the greatest scoring performance in Miami Heat history Tuesday night, pouring in 83 points in a 150–129 win over the Washington Wizards. The historic outburst instantly placed him alongside the NBA’s most legendary single-game scorers, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain on the league’s all-time list and surpassing Kobe Bryant’s famed 81-point performance. Recently, an NFL veteran chose Kobe over LeBron James in the NBA GOAT debate.

According to ESPN, Adebayo’s night included multiple franchise records and one stat line the league has never seen before. The Heat star finished 20-of-43 from the field, 7-of-22 from three-point range, and an astonishing 36-of-43 from the free-throw line, setting Miami franchise marks for both free throws made and attempted in a game.

The performance unfolded like a scoring avalanche from the opening tip. Adebayo erupted for 31 points in the first quarter, immediately signaling that the night could become something historic. By halftime, he had already piled up 43 points, smashing the Heat record for most points in any half and surpassing his previous career-high total before the game was even halfway over.

The scoring never slowed after halftime. Adebayo finished the third quarter with 62 points, a number that alone would have represented one of the highest single-game totals in the league this season. The milestone came on a dunk with 22 seconds remaining in the period, which pushed him past LeBron James’ previous Miami single-game record of 61 points, set on March 3, 2014.

Opposing defenses had no solution. Washington repeatedly sent double teams, triple teams, and at one point, what appeared to be a quadruple team at Adebayo in the fourth quarter. The Wizards’ constant fouling attempts only fueled the scoring further, sending him to the line again and again as he closed in on history.

His final tally of 83 points moved him into extremely rare territory. Only Wilt Chamberlain, whose legendary 100-point game remains the league record, has ever produced a higher single-game total. The achievement also pushed Adebayo past Bryant’s career-high 81-point performance, which stood as the second-best scoring game in NBA history for two decades.

The historic night carried an emotional ending. Adebayo walked off the floor in tears and embraced his mother, Marilyn Blount, in a moment that captured the magnitude of the achievement after the final buzzer. Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra described the night as something far beyond a typical standout performance.

“An absolutely surreal night,” Spoelstra said afterward. Adebayo later reflected on the significance of seeing his name alongside two of the most iconic scorers the sport has ever produced. “Like I said, I wish I could relive it twice,” Adebayo told reporters. “So this is a special moment. Wilt, me, and then Kobe, which sounds crazy.”

The moment also sparked playful reactions from those closest to him. Adebayo’s girlfriend, four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson, joked on social media that his performance may have changed the dynamic of their household. “Welp won’t have the highest career high in the house anymore,” Wilson wrote. “At least it gives me something to go after.”

The NBA’s highest scoring performance this season, entering Tuesday, had been 56 points, recorded by Nikola Jokic for Denver against Minnesota on Christmas night. Adebayo surpassed that number before the fourth quarter even began. For one unforgettable night in Miami, Bam Adebayo did something almost no player in NBA history has done: place his name directly beside Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant in the sport’s most exclusive scoring conversation.
