Anthony Joshua had been on a high since dominantly defeating Jake Paul in their fight on December 19 in Miami. However, it all came crashing down for him right as he was celebrating his win in the same month.
The Olympic Heavyweight boxer was involved in a deadly car crash during his visit to Nigeria. Many fans feared that he might never fully recover from the trauma to get back in the ring once again, and they might’ve been right, according to a new revelation from his uncle.
AJ’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, has claimed that he has made up his mind about putting down his boxing gloves for good. His uncle told The Punch that they’re glad he made this decision since they’re always heavily emotionally invested in his fights, and it even causes them some trauma for them.
“The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing. That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally. Each time he’s knocked down, it is just like the heart is coming out of our chest,” he continued. “All these emotional feelings whenever he’s fighting, it’s too much trauma for us, also. Now that he has said that he’s leaving while the ovation is highest, we are happy.”
Anthony Joshua Has Yet To Officially Announce His Decision
Anthony Joshua is likely still reeling from the trauma of the fatal car crash that took place near Lagos, Nigeria. The deadly car accident tragically claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
Joshua’s uncle now claims that AJ plans to step away from the boxing ring completely and has confirmed his decision to the family. It’s an understandable decision to make since he would need time to help heal from this incident emotionally as well.
However, Joshua has yet to announce this decision to the public officially. His fans would certainly be heartbroken to hear that he might never fight again, but also support him in his decision, considering the circumstances.
Joshua Issued A Public Statement About The Traumatic Incident
Anthony Joshua hasn’t fully opened up about the traumatic incident. However, he issued a public update a few days later after the fatal car crash and after being discharged from the hospital.
Joshua would post two images on social media and break his silence. One image was alongside his mother and three other women, one of whom held up a picture of Sina Ghami, who tragically lost his life in the car crash. He captioned the post ‘My Brothers Keepers,’ and it only gives up the glimpse of the bond he had shared with him.
