All-Star Fred McGriff Added to 2nd Inning Program in MLB The Show 21

All-Star Fred McGriff has been added to the 2nd Inning Program in MLB The Show 21. This is the first player added to the latest Diamond Dynasty Inning program. McGriff is an 88 overall 1B with 78 contact vs. RHP, 76 contact vs. LHP, 90 power vs. RHP, and 86 power vs. LHP. He is a bronze fielder, which is obviously less than ideal, but it’s at first base so shouldn’t be too big of an issue.

All-Star Fred McGriff is on the lower end of McGriff cards we have seen in The Show through the years, but he has his fans. He has 73 vision and 106 discipline so he’s sort of between worlds as a 1B option right now. He doesn’t quite have top-tier power, contact, or vision, but if you’re familiar with his swing, he’ll still be a fun change of pace. McGriff generally falls into my underrated bucket. I’m a big fan of his swing, and I just like using players who don’t get a lot of love. Plus, I’m just a big Crime Dog fan as a child of the TBS Superstation era. In short, Ted Turner forced me to be a fan of players like Andruw Jones and Fred McGriff by sucking me in with lots of Saved By The Bell and WCW as the appetizer.

As for the impact on the 2nd Inning Program, you will earn 35,000 XP for locking him in your collection. We will get at least one more player program for the 2nd Inning, and I mention that because I know many folks are still trying to scrounge up enough XP to get the 2nd Inning Bosses unlocked. A couple of the moments look like they might take some doing for McGriff, so this might be one where you split your time a bit between online and offline if you don’t feel like grinding out a couple of them. That being said, I know some folks are anti-online in all facets for DD, so I still think the moments are manageable — just more annoying than a standard player program.

  1. This card seems really good (he absolutely mashes), but the moments, especially the multi-game ones haven't been easy. I took about 4 attempts at the 16 bases one and I'm on my third for the 7 H, 4 XBH one which might be even tougher. You're often going to get around 13-16 AB's in the whole thing (maybe more depending how the simmed innings go) so you need to hit around .500 or a little below WITH power. Unless you're hitting every ball out of the park, luck is going to play some part in that.
At least you know it's a quick reset if you have 2 clunker games in a row.
This can be subverted a bit with the two online missions (XBH with 1B or HR with SD), but if you only do the offline content, you'll have to do all the moments.
The only one I’ve struggled with is the Expos ones. Scherzer and Strasburg are tough even on veteran and Lester throws absolute trash that’s difficult to square up. Bad luck too for me. Every other moment McGriff was crushing it but on this one he kept flying out to the warning track.
Still, I think he’ll be a fun card for the West TA map and Padres daily inning missions.
The expos challenge was such a pain, I think it took me at least 6 or 7 tries. I can't decide if SDS felt bad or I just hit a groove, and got past it. Either way, think this will be a good card to use and grind Team Affinity with.

He absolutely mashed in the multigame moments for me but the first hit single HR moment he refused to hit it out. Took me probably a dozen tries or so on that even getting robbed at the wall once. Lol
