Chipotle has spent the last few years dealing with customer criticism that it has become increasingly stingy with portions. The company has insisted it is working to improve consistency across its locations, but complaints about small servings still pop up regularly online. One recent TikTok video added more fuel to the ongoing debate after a mother said the “large” bag of chips she purchased barely contained anything.
The video, posted by Stacy Hernandez under the handle @stadhdcy, quickly gained traction and racked up more than 56,500 views. In the clip, Hernandez explains that she stopped by Chipotle and picked up a large order of chips that cost nearly five dollars. Her plan was simple. She wanted to bring them home for her two teenage sons, who she says are always hungry.
As reported by BroBible, according to Hernandez, it didn’t take long to realize something wasn’t right. She says she had barely pulled out of the parking lot when she reached into the bag to grab a chip and noticed the portion seemed suspiciously small. Curious, she decided to count them out loud on camera.
Hernandez Was Shocked At The Amount Of Chips In The Bag
“One, two, three… five, seven, nine, 11, 13, 15, 17,” she counts. That total shocked her. There were only seventeen chips in the entire bag. For a product advertised as a large portion, Hernandez felt the number was far too low. She explained that the chips were meant to feed her two sons, who are 15 and 12 years old. In her words, the boys are basically always hungry.
She joked that they are “bottomless pits,” which made the tiny portion feel even more ridiculous. Frustrated, Hernandez questioned how the order could possibly qualify as a large serving. “Chipotle, are you f—— kidding me? Did I order one chip? No way that is a large,” she said.
She continued expressing disbelief over the amount of food she received for the price she paid. “Seventeen chips is still not sufficient for one serving—small or large,” she says.
Hernandez then referenced comments that have circulated online about the company’s customer base and pricing strategy. She pointed out that even customers with high incomes would expect more than a handful of chips for their money.
“You said you want your target audience to be people who make a hundred thousand dollars or more a year. Your chips need to be more than that. Even if we make a hundred thousand dollars, we want more than seventeen chips.”
Instead of letting the situation go, Hernandez decided to drive back to the restaurant to sort things out. She later shared a follow-up video explaining how the conversation went once she returned.
She also addressed why she hadn’t checked the bag before leaving the counter in the first place. Hernandez said she was trying to move quickly so the cashier could help the next customer in line. On top of that, she doesn’t believe customers should have to inspect their food every time they place an order.
“Who checks the bag before they walk out?” Once inside, Hernandez approached the situation calmly. She explained the issue to the staff without raising her voice or causing a scene.
“I walked in, and I said, ‘I think a mistake happened here. There’s seventeen chips in this bag, and I ordered a large. I don’t know if you rang me up wrong or what happened here, but I’m gonna need more chips than this,’” she recalls.
The employees quickly handed her another bag of chips. This replacement bag had a large sticker on it, which made Hernandez believe the original order may have simply been a mix-up. Since the guacamole she received was already the correct size, she concluded that someone likely grabbed the wrong bag of chips by accident. She said there were no hard feelings after the situation was corrected.
Another detail Hernandez referenced in her video involves Chipotle’s marketing strategy. According to Fox Business, company leadership has said that around 60 percent of its customer base earns more than $100,000 per year. Executives have also suggested the brand plans to lean more heavily into that demographic moving forward.
Online viewers had plenty to say about Hernandez’s experience after the video spread across TikTok. One popular comment joked, “That’s the amount of chips I have while I’m deciding if I’m going to have chips!!!” Another person brought up the ongoing conversation about the company’s messaging and pricing. “Didn’t chipotle CEO just make a bunch of comments about how they are raising prices and they only appeal to people who make over 100 K a year?”
