A Texas high school baseball team's bullying scandal just turned into a criminal investigation, and it's becoming a disturbing pattern in the region

It’s the third sports bullying controversy to hit Central Texas in just three years.

Ten baseball players and a staff member from Lehman High School in Kyle have been suspended following a bullying incident that has now turned into a criminal investigation. The suspensions, which affected members of both the varsity and junior varsity baseball teams, were announced by Hays CISD on Thursday, April 9.

The situation began on Tuesday, April 7, when parents brought serious concerns to campus administration and the school resource officer. They reported what the district described as a “potentially serious pattern of bullying” involving baseball team members. Hays CISD then launched a joint investigation with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, which led to the suspensions.

According to My San Antonio, some of the alleged actions may go beyond school disciplinary matters and could constitute criminal activity. Because of this, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office is now the lead agency handling the investigation.

The Lehman High School bullying case reflects a broader problem in Central Texas athletics

Despite the suspensions, the Lehman Lobos baseball team will still play out the final two weeks of its season. The team did forfeit their April 10 game against Liberty Hill, but Hays CISD Chief Communication Officer Tim Savoy explained that the district wants to avoid penalizing “students not implicated in any potential wrongdoing.”

In other sports news making headlines this week, a top golfer’s on-camera gesture at the Masters showed just how much pressure athletes face in high-stakes moments. Hays CISD Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright was direct in his statement, saying that “Bullying of any kind is intolerable.”

He added that such behavior “goes against everything we are about at Lehman High School and in Hays CISD,” and that “those who test that demand will meet with swift and serious consequences.”

This is the third sports-related bullying controversy to hit Central Texas in just three years. In 2023, a student named Carter Mannon at Lake Travis ISD was allegedly bullied when a football teammate, Gus Cordova, placed peanuts in his locker, knowing Mannon had a severe peanut allergy. Mannon had to transfer schools, and his parents sued Lake Travis ISD over the incident.

Cordova also faced consequences, losing a scholarship offer to the Texas Longhorns following the controversy. The incident drew widespread attention to how seriously bullying in school sports can affect a student’s life and future. Away from the sports world, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s leaked wedding location has been another big story dominating headlines recently.

Then in December 2025, parents came before the Comal ISD Board of Trustees with concerns about the Canyon High School football team in New Braunfels. They described a “toxic culture” within the team, pointing to “leadership failures, coaching practices and hostility” that left some players demoralized and caused others to leave the team entirely.

The repeated appearance of these kinds of incidents across different districts in Central Texas points to an ongoing problem in high school athletics. It raises serious questions about whether school administrations and athletic departments are doing enough to build safe and respectful environments for student athletes.
