A Taco Bell Customer's Viral Outburst Highlights A Major Problem, And The Company's 'Green' Mission Could Be The Real Culprit

A customer is frustrated with the chain

A frustrated customer’s frustration became a broader conversation online. The incident began when a TikTok user posted a heated review of his order from Taco Bell. He showed how the paper wrapper appeared to stick directly to his food and tear it apart when he tried to open it.

As reported by DailyDot, in the video, the man unwraps a quesadilla only to find the tortilla clinging stubbornly to the packaging. As he pulls the wrapper away, parts of the food rip off with it. His irritation was visible, calling for the company to redesign the packaging so customers can open their meals “without ripping the damn quesadilla.” The clip quickly went viral, garnering more than 11 million views and over a million likes as other users shared similar experiences.

In recent years, Taco Bell has been moving toward major environmental goals, including turning its packaging to more recyclable or compostable materials. The company previously relied on foil-lined wrappers made from layers of paper, plastic, and aluminum. These materials preserved heat and prevented sticking but were difficult to recycle.

Taco Bell Is Just Staying True To Its Goal

In 2020, the company made a bold commitment, rolling out single-material paper packaging designed to be easier to recycle and more environmentally responsible. ” Our business growth in the last decade has positioned us to create change for good and implement creative solutions for our planet, our people and our food. We’re excited to shake things up and make 2020 even more about what matters most: our purpose,” Taco Bell said in a press release.

This move, as proven by the frustrated Tiktok ranter, has come at the expense of experience. There are some customers who believe that the eco-friendly materials used for their packaging are causing the sticking issue. Paper wrappers, unlike foil-lined alternatives, can absorb moisture and steam from hot food. As a result, these stick to food like tortillas and other soft foods.

Social media users quickly rallied around the frustrated customer, with many saying they had encountered the same problem. “THIS! My hard shell tacos get their bottoms ripped out and it gets everywhere!!” one user commented. “This crashout is so valid,” another said, acknowledging the ranter’s feelings.

Wingstop also had a recent customer-fuelled encounter, with a woman calling for the company to change the recipe of their fries. At least Taco Ball is not getting into feuds with other companies, like Burger King and McDonald’s, whose president and CEO, respectively, got into a back-and-forth recently. For now, though, Taco Bell has not publicly responded to the viral complaint.
