A Florida Woman Thought Her House Was Being Robbed, What She Found Instead Was A Terrifying Deathmatch Between Two Beasts

She saw two alligators.

A woman in Ave Maria, Florida experienced a frightening situation at home after hearing what she initially believed was an intruder trying to break in. What began as a moment of panic inside her house quickly turned into something far more unusual when she stepped outside and discovered two alligators fighting on her screened-in lanai.

According to BroBible, Kayla Burress said she was inside her home with her sleeping infant when she first heard loud banging noises coming from the porch area. The sounds grew louder and seemed to move closer, leading her to believe someone was trying to force their way into her home.

When she went outside to investigate, she came face-to-face with a shocking scene. Two large alligators were engaged in an aggressive fight directly on her lanai, causing immediate damage to the screened enclosure. The animals crashed into the structure with enough force to tear and bend parts of the mesh and metal framing as they struggled with each other.

Two Alligators Were Brawling

Burress later explained how quickly the situation escalated and how different it was from anything she expected. She said the animals appeared to be locked in a violent territorial dispute, with visible signs of injury during the confrontation. The intensity of the encounter made it clear that the situation was far more dangerous than a simple wildlife sighting near her home.

“I thought somebody was breaking in because I never thought that the gators were going to enter my porch,” Burress told WINK News. “It definitely looked like they were fighting over territory or something. It wasn’t like a mating ritual that I had seen, because there was blood and it had it some hind quarters, like in its jaws through the door.”

As the situation unfolded, the damage to the screened enclosure worsened while the alligators continued to struggle. Eventually, a licensed wildlife trapper was called to the scene to safely remove one of the animals from the lanai. Even with professional help on site, the removal process proved difficult due to the strength and aggression of the alligator involved.

Burress described the entire experience as frightening and overwhelming, especially given how close it happened to her home and child. After the encounter, she felt the need to warn others in her neighborhood about the potential danger, particularly families with children and pet owners.

“It was scary,” Burress said. “And I just warned everybody else in the neighborhood, like, watch your kids. Watch the dogs. Because it was fast and they were powerful.” Local reports noted that while the incident was alarming, wildlife experts say this type of behavior is not uncommon during this time of year in Florida. Alligators can become more aggressive during mating season as they compete for territory and respond defensively when confronted or trapped in close quarters.

“They’re … going to be on edge because they think their life is at stake,” an expert said. “So they’re going to do everything they can. So when you trap them, corner them, they’re going to show those they’re going to show defensive behaviors and aggressive behaviors.”

The incident serves as a reminder of how wildlife activity can unexpectedly intersect with residential areas in parts of Florida. For Burress, what started as a moment of fear over a possible intruder ended as a close encounter with two powerful reptiles fighting just outside her door.
