While soccer has been the most popular sport in the world for a long time, it has yet to really take hold in the US. It has been a hit with youths but that interest seems to gradually wane with age. With the World Cup in 2010, English Premier League games on ESPN and a rising star in Jozy Altidore, the sport may gain a much larger audience in North America.

Simply put, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 has already sold millions overseas. Now it’s time to take the battle to the place where football has a different meaning.

Gamesindustry has posted an article entitled, FIFA: The Road to Redemption.

Quote:
"The annual battle for football videogame superiority between Konami and Electronic Arts feels like it's been going on for as long as consoles have been around themselves. In fact, that's pretty much the case, for all intents and purposes, given that the first FIFA title to hit the shelves did so in 1993 on the SEGA platforms of the day, while International Superstar Soccer - the precursor to Pro Evolution Soccer - arrived in Japan on the Super Nintendo in 1994.

Since then they've spawned around 36 titles between them and succeeded in dividing opinion on just which was the better all-round football game, with - historically - a sense that while the FIFA games were well-finished in terms of presentation and licenses, the Pro Evo titles were where the real football fans spent their money."

Like many North Americans, my exposure to soccer has been limited to playing youth soccer (and one ill-fated adult season), catching the odd match on TV and, of course, learning the sport through videogames. While I wouldn't describe myself as a "hardcore" soccer videogame fan, thanks to some of the earlier Winning Eleven titles and last year's excellent FIFA 09, I have come to appreciate how well soccer translates to a fun, engrossing game experience. The nonstop flow of the action, coupled with the depth of strategy needed to truly succeed on the pitch, helps to create a videogame experience I feel few sports can match.

EA Sports’ latest release, FIFA Soccer 10, only reinforces that belief. Building on what was already a very well rounded product in FIFA 09, this year’s iteration of EA’s long-running soccer franchise pushes gameplay to new heights while sanding off a few of the rough edges.

Responding to post-launch feedback from the community during the last two weeks, a new downloadable game update is being readied for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. What follows are details of exactly what changes you can expect on installing the update.

Eurogamer has the scoop.

Quote:
"EA Sports has told Eurogamer that a large number of the problems reported with FIFA 10 on the official forums have been addressed or will be addressed by a new patch, which should be out this week.

"We have already created one patch based on gameplay feedback after the demo went live, and we are now creating another one that will go out this week (fingers crossed), in order to give our gamers the best possible experience," a spokesperson for EA Canada told Eurogamer overnight.

We asked whether issues with Game Face, Live Seasons, Club Mode and disconnections were connected, and whether there was any progress sorting them out.

On Game Face and Live Seasons, we were referred to EA's public posts on the subject, which include advice on Game Face usability and a workaround for people experiencing problems with Live Seasons 2.0."

Sigames have just released the Football Manager 2010 gold demo. Please post your impressions here.

Quote:
"We are absolutely thrilled to announce the immediate availability of the FM 2010 Gold Demo. That’s right; it’s here, earlier than expected!

All of us here at SI believe that FM 2010 is our best game yet, but we know that you will be the judge of that and welcome your feedback. So let us know what you think of it on these forums.

We have always worked closely with the community to help us shape Football Manager, but I’d like to take the opportunity on behalf of everybody at SI to thank all those involved in the beta testing programme and to all of you for continuing to support us.

Over the past 12 months we’ve taken some risks by changing the way we work in an attempt to deliver you better games from the get go. We think we’ve achieved that starting with FM 2010 and we intend to go from strength to strength.

Onto the FM 2010 Gold Demo and all the details. The demo comes in two flavours, both “Strawberry” and “Vanilla”. The strawberry demo is the full package and complete experience, the vanilla demo is a light version which has been stripped down and is significantly smaller in size."

Gamespot has posted their hands-on preview of Pro Evolution Soccer 2010.

Quote:
"The more important thing to note about PES 2010 is the gameplay. The game is returning to its simulation roots this year, and from our time with the game, it felt easier to create space and get the ball through poor defensive lines, which should offer more challenge when playing defensively. While we were previously told that Konami was not implementing 360-degree control this year, the developer has done a backflip and taken a leaf out of the FIFA 10 book to add the new analog control scheme. While seasoned fans may opt to stick to the tried-and-tested D pad option, we felt that 360-degree control was marginally more responsive and well worth consideration as a primary control scheme.

Off the pitch, the big feature this year is the implementation of a new tactics system, which lets you adjust attacking and defending strategies on the fly with 100 different levels of control. If your team is one point down in the closing stages of a match, for instance, you may find that maxing out your attacking tactics for one big push could make the difference between a draw and a loss."

Eurogamer has posted their hands-on impressions of Football Manager 2010.

Quote:
"New features and tweaks abound. First off, there's been a complete visual revamp. When I first fired up the game I almost thought I'd loaded the wrong football management sim, with the new tabbed navigational system and multi-windowed presentation more akin to the FIFA Manager franchise than previous Football Manager offerings. Clearly, this cleaner, leaner presentation is meant to create a more user-friendly path through the game's myriad features and screens, but it was only after a couple of hours of trial and error that the new layout started to show its true worth.

After its hit-and-miss debut last year, the 3D match engine makes a return with a number of key enhancements. There are a hundred new animations, resulting in more believable player movements, though the action still appears to lack the level of visual detail and animation variety possessed by CM2010's debuting 3D action. Animated crowds fill the stadiums, with attendances seemingly reliant on match importance, while some decent weather effects help add variety. Perhaps the most noteworthy on-pitch improvement is goalkeeper animations, as net-minders now appear more mobile than Football Manager 2009's cumbersome keepers. The action, whether viewed in real time or as a set of highlights, proves as realistic as ever, once again displaying its dominance over its rivals."
