Card modes are now simply everywhere. No matter where you turn, a sports game is trying to give you free cards to entice you to play modes like Diamond Dynasty, Ultimate Team, and MyTeam.

Several years ago, the overwhelming attitude towards these modes was hugely negative -- but in recent years those attitudes seem to have moderated somewhat.

What about now? Do you play card modes? Do you enjoy them? Hate them? Sound off by voting in the poll and leave your opinion in a comment below!

Absolutely hate them. They have become developers main focus, and have left other modes way behind. Look at Madden and their connected careers. Sure it got an update recently, but the majority of it is still pretty much the same and has been that way for years.

But hey, lets sell some idiots some cards and make more money, and do that year after year. What's sad is the same people keep buying into it. So stupid

Don't care for them at all... I get that the consumers interest is different now than it used to be but it would really be great if they focused more on the realistic simulation modes of these games. There is no way that a game as good as NBA 2K16 shouldn't have a quality online association. Playing in a 32 man CFM in madden has kept me excited for every release. I cant say I would be if it wasn't for that mode.

As long as developers try to engage online h2h multiplayer as a focus, these games will never die out. A lot of these card modes do require you to play against the CPU & that's pretty boring.

Understand why they exist, wish they didn't take away resources from games. Hard to believe that they don't when you compare things sports games had ten years ago that they don't now.

The ONLY game that has gotten the "Ultimate Team" thing right is UFC 2. Coins are easy to earn. No need to spend real money to build a team. Otherwise I hate this mode in games.

Don't care for them one bit. It's become a money making force behind almost every sports game

You took the words right out of my mouth. I hate these modes with a passion. The majority of the development time is spent on them and other areas of the game are neglected. Plus, I like playing with the real teams not some made up all star super teams. IMO, though highly unlikely, companies should get 2 development teams. One team totally devoted to ultimate team type modes while the other team focus on the rest of the game. Since they're getting all this extra money from these modes, its not like they can't afford it.

I HATE IT! Because of these STUPID modes, we may never see full classic teams in Madden or NHL again! We might not see it in the Show either! NBA 2K has it right, but I'd still like the developer to include all-time teams. Greed is running these sports games now. Smh

I've played a lot of Ultimate Team modes, but never spent a dime on any of them. You are not forced to spend money. I can see how they take away from developing though. I'd say cards are most suited for the Show (baseball). I used to enjoy collecting the cards in the ASB and MLB 2K8 games.

Wrong, the reason we don't have full classic teams is the individual rights fees to the player or their estate.

I love'em. Madden UT and The Show DD are pretty much the only modes I play. As someone who hasn't spent a dime on packs (or coins or "stubbs") I still find the team building aspect challenging and engaging. The giant flaw in the concept is eventually you get to level when the "pay to win" people are unavoidable. Currently in Madden UT season "All Pro - 2nd" or higher is pretty much people with 99 overall players in nearly every position, which sucks. Which is why I'm super stoked for Maddens Salary Cap concept in UT. That's a nice idea for the non pay to win people and I'm really looking forward to it. The Show seems to do a better job of matching you up as after roughly 75 online DD games I haven't seen to many teams to where so over powered that I couldn't compete. Even the pay to win guys are beatable with good pitching...it's a lot harder to win in Madden when you're overpowered, even if you are better on the sticks. The salary cap should fix that.

Something not to be overlooked is the fact that these modes generate revenue only from people who are willing participants. And the fact is that a number of sports games don't sell particularly well. Given that the landscape of sports games has been shrinking, all that FUT and MUT revenue is helping to keep franchises like NHL and (for better or worse) NBA Live from disappearing.

I think it's naive and rather selfish to vote for the fourth option that these modes should not exist. There are players who enjoy them, and there are benefits to having them. If you don't like them, just don't play them.

They're pretty good. Madden, Fifa etc aren't ever going to be good as pc simulation games (like Front Office Football, Football Manager etc) so I really couldn't care less about how good the franchise mode is on those games. Really, the only fun that comes form those games are the competitive modes so I usually just play ranked online or an ultimate team mode.

I probably like Madden's ultimate team mode the best since it is the easiest to get coins and they have new content all the time. Once (if?) these games start to have really solid gameplay, then I'll love the modes even more.

I love how this is the reality, not enough people really care about them but because they make companies money they become first priority.

Remember back in the day when people just made games to be fun

Unfortunately they have become a HUGE source of revenue for the developers which has caused them more to focus on these modes rather than franchise modes. I find myself playing them in some games, simply because franchise isn't up to par. That said, lately I have been shying away from games entirely with no quality franchise mode and not even purchasing the game. Madden will be an example and a no purchase this coming year because of the lack of time spent on gameplay from the developers to put that time into MUT.

Remember how not too long ago, when you bought a game at gamestop or whatever, you paid full price and got the full game?
These card game modes are microtransaction central, all because people are dumb enough to keep playing them. I'm proud of being part of a time where video games have reached new hights, VR is looking awesome, and 2015 was one of the best years for video games. But I'm so freaking embarrassed to be in a time where mobile phone "games" are rising, microtransactions are something you see in every game (except indie), and EA are alive.
And people will continue playing these pieces of **** because it's LITERALLY gambling, and gambling is something addicting.

I don't like the attention and resources they take away from Franchise/Be a Gm modes, but that's always going to be true of any mode that isn't the mode I play, so not really a good point.

Overall, I'm indifferent. I look at them and say: yeah, it's a good mode, but it's not for me. I don't play them, but they don't offend me.

# 16 jkra0512 @ 04/26/16 04:18 PM
Don't play them, and don't like them. I see their place, but they've definitely taken their share of resources from other single-player modes like Franchise mode (especially in NHL and The Show). With gaming increasingly becoming more social, these types of modes will only become more prevalent (and relevant) in sports games.

# 17 Snoopy2quik @ 04/26/16 06:46 PM
The only card mode I have and will ever play is Diamond Dynasty. Unlike other similar modes, you can acquire cards from playing different modes within the game or simply logging in to eventually receive a pack of cards. The Inside Edge that alters players in-game attributes based on their professional performances on the field is a major upgrade. I no longer have this huge desire to have the best players anymore. I love it and I hope it only gets better from here!

I hate these modes but my little brother loves them and to me that's who they are geared towards. Kids who wanna claim "their team is the best" when in reality they all have 90% of the same players. I hate game modes where I cAn have Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice on my team and my opponent also has them. I understand why devs love them as its a steady source of money after the initial price of the game.

# 19 JoshC1977 @ 04/26/16 10:22 PM
I don't abhor them, but they all do one thing that keeps me from playing them...they shorten the games WAY too much! Even MLBTS' Diamond Dynasty mode does this (and I love the concept of some of their new games) as to my horror, they are 3 inning games....I mean, heck, even Little Leaguers play 6 innings. In Madden, I think the quarter length is a ridiculously low 3 or 4 minutes...seriously....most of my drives in CFM are longer than that.

I didnt come to play these games like im playing D&D or some fantasy card game, yea i understand the reason for them.. something new and different for everyone.

but work on other things, gameplay, how about noooo more connected career mode, i hate it, i hate not being able to watch other games that im not apart of or play them, like pro bowl and super bowl,

fix the supersim stats, i mean they are not to bad, but 90% of the run plays are 4 yards, i hardly ever see big long runs, here and there i will, i was almost half tempted to do a whole season on super sim plays to see how the stats work out
