MLB The Show 24 Little Things Thread

One of the threads OSers love to make with every big sports game is the “little things” thread. It’s been a mainstay for many years, and so of course we’ve now got plenty of things filling up the MLB The Show 24 Little Things thread.

These threads are all over the place in a good way. They will touch everything from gameplay to presentation to modes to just very random stuff. One of the first things that came up was the showcasing of the EvoShield Sliding Mitts now being in the game.

This actually became its own little sub-topic because there was a glitch that was preventing the EvoShield Sliding Mitts from changing colors. OS user laguna_bob came up with a perfect workaround.

Just found a way to color the EvoShield Sliding Mitts in the game! They’re currently glitched, so coloring it doesn’t actually affect it and it stays at a default black color. But, upon editing my A’s roster equipment, I found that they are colorable. Their color is tied to the color of the wrist guards worn by that player for whatever reason. Hopefully this gets patched so that players who wear different colored wrist guards than their sliding mitts can be better recreated in-game.

Sticking with presentation, SDS put it front and center that there would be more dugout celebrations after home runs in this year’s game, and so quite a few posts have been cataloging the various ones in ’24. My favorite that has been posted (by Arizito Sports) involves the Tigers and their Hockeytown homage with a hockey stick and helmet. Of course, it’s technically outdated as now the Tigers are using another Ilitch-owned brand for 2024, going with a Little Caesars celebration where a dude has pizzas on a spear. It feels kind of corporate and gross in a way that Hockeytown didn’t even though the Red Wings are also owned by the Ilitch family, but I digress.

Bat flips have also been called out multiple times as well, and they certainly are more saucy at times — and have been trending that way for a couple years now in The Show. It’s a trend that can border on the absurd to an extent (if you don’t watch a lot of KBO games), but they really do hit the spot overall. Here’s a Christopher Morel bat flip that comes from OS user The Gamer.

Sticking with homers, OS user agentlaw13 gets a little more in the weeds and calls out something that all sports games need to always think about: anticipation. NBA 2K fans probably know the most about this topic because we’ve made a stink before about how that game was giving away a “green” release before shots even went in, thus taking away all the suspense and anticipation. They later patched it so we had more control over those moments (not forcing camera cuts and allowing us to turn off green release notifications), but agentlaw13 calls out a worthwhile change here in MLB The Show 24 that gets into the same sort of concept.

Runners on base will now pause on the basepaths with wall scraper home runs to see if the ball is caught or going over the fence. In years past, the runners would keep running on home run balls, taking away the suspense on long fly balls to and over the wall.

I think MLB The Show could do even more on this front as they could tweak things like giving us more control over “no doubt” home runs by even having those turned off if we don’t want that instant camera cut, but that’s a smaller thing.

There’s so much more I could call out, but the last two quick ones I’ll mention hit on franchise mode and Storylines. OS user Alfonsori points out a nice touch for franchise mode:

You can now trade arbitration-eligible players and players on renewable contracts in franchise during the offseason.

And lastly, OS user TripleCrown9 shows points out one of the many small touches that are in the Jeter Storylines mode:

I like how in Jeter Mode, the Yankees wear their year-specific World Series patches/memorial patches (even though they aren’t available in the rest of the game). I’m in the ’99 World Series and the Yankees (not the Braves unfortunately) have the ’99 WS patch on the right sleeve and the DiMaggio memorial on the left sleeve.

Feel free to head to the Little Things thread for MLB The Show 24 and add to the discussion.
