One of the expectations of a new generation of sports games was much better looking games overall. Now that you've had a chance (presumably) to play a few games -- and now that most major franchises have seen the next-gen treatment -- what is your general overall impression of the visual fidelity of the new generation of sports games?

Are they better than you expected? Worse? About what you expected?

From still screen shots to me way above expectations IMO , I can't wait to see them in motion. I have no doubt they will be jaw dropping.

despite all the negativity around nba 2k14, from a pure visual standpoint for a first game on a new system, I am incredibly happy about the future. I can't wait to see mlb and nba and nhl in about 2-3 years

I can't vote because they don't have my option. It's been hit and miss. Some games like NBA 2K and UFC look crazy good and you have things like Madden and NBA Live that look like they could have still been PS3 games. But the future still looks promising and I will still like to see more.

Still early in cycle ask again in another year or two

Having my PS4 since launch and owning NBA2K14 and Madden as well as the demos for FIFA 14 and NBA Live and it's definitely a mixed bag. 2K14, of course, is visually incredible. Fifa's ok but Madden disappoints me and Live looks horrible.

As far as the future, UFC looks pretty good and MLB is just alright to me. I think I'm expecting more from MLB and being underwhelmed. Need vids and hands on of MLB.

It will always be worse than expected. I think there is an unrealistic expectation of what graphics will achieve. By the time we reach the end of this generation, many will claim that those end graphics is what we should have expected from day 1. Personally, I think we are right on par.

I grew up on Pong & Pacman so visuals aren't going to influence my purchasing choice, gameplay will.
A pretty, two hour HD movie of nothing but a man sleeping will never beat an old white & black movie classic like The Great Dictator or Horse Feathers.

I definitely think that the graphical leap from PS2/Xbox to PS3/Xbox 360 was more impressive than the leap from PS3/Xbox 360 to PS4/Xbox One, but ....

With that being said, a lot of the sports games that came out at the PS3/Xbox 360 launch were lacking features, had problems with gameplay, more than likely because the developers wanted to achieve that WOW factor based on graphics.

This time around, in my opinion, the developers are smarter in that while graphics aren't MONUMENTALLY better than the PS3/Xbox 360, next gen versions play just as good, if not better (FIFA, Madden), than their current-gen counterparts. Shows that these companies actually DO listen to the consumer from time-to-time.

I was expecting to be unable to tell the difference between the game and the real thing. The 360 and PS3 came close. That hasn't panned out yet in this gen. Does the hardware just not have the power, or do they just have to program the games better?

The difference last-gen was SD to HD. It was like VHS to DVD. Next-gen is DVD to Blu-Ray. You can tell the visuals and sounds are better, just a smaller leap. I think this generation will be defined by, hopefully, AI improvements. I think last generation was defined by visual quality.

I know that this is quite easy to point out and of course anyone with eyes and a brain can make this point but in my opinion this jump between generations cannot be compared to jump to PS3/360 because that jump was the jump to high definition which was transcendent not only in video games (like our sports video games) but also in TV in general whether it be our favorite sports on ESPN or our local news stations who began to do news in high definition. Not making excuses but that was an incredible advancement in graphical standards period in all of entertainment. I will say again this is my opinion in regards to comparing this jump to the last.

Just waiting for the graphics of future releases. 2k look really good the first month or so, but once everything set in, it still looks kinda cartoony to me. Just a better looking cartoon than last-gen.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. And considering this is the first wave of titles, I'm almost giddy over the development and improvements we will see. NBA 2K14 is the best looking title I had ever played - until I loaded up MGS5 last night.

FYI - I'm running on a 720p Pioneer Kuro from 2007.

As far as launch goes I expected a bigger jump than some of the titles have shown but im not at all disappointed with the graphics so far. They are great. Some really stand out (NBA2K/Ryse/inFAMOUS).

I agree. I don't think this gen is going to have as drastic of a jump as the previous one. PS3/360 really benefited on the HD boom of the last 10-12 years. At least for the first year or two I think we will be hard pressed to see much of a difference between a game like Last of Us and Dead Rising 3, for example. But where Dead Rising 3 was impressive was in the amount of zombies on the screen at one time. That's something the PS3/360 don't have enough resources for.

Seems like lighting, AI behavior, and attn to detail are going to be the obvious improvements for the PS4/XBO. Having played both Ryse and NBA 2K though - I can tell you those are the prettiest games I have ever got my hands on and it's not even close. Although, I think NBA's lighting is a bit exaggerated.

Some developers will simply not go all out with maximizing the visuals (game, TV & presentation) because it is the foundation of their marketing.

That's why some developers games show bigger leaps, while others utilize baby steps.
Whether we want to admit it or not, being able to sale games based off of "Slight" graphical improvements is/has been a very profitable model to follow.

My expectation was for a "Major" leap in the overall experience of graphics & presentation.

I did 10 yrs of various reasons why this area was difficult to maximize on the 360/PS3 and the wait-n-buy the next game release concept and when the new Gen of consoles dropped, I felt really used because some games gave a glimps that more could have been done, in spite of the many reasons to the contrary.

So I haven't bought either of the new consoles, because from what I've seen/played and from a lot of reviews, there really isn't that big of a difference between current Gen and these shiny new consoles gameplay/visual presentation wise.

It's a lot of social media/media type trinkets added outside the scope of the actual gameplay experience that are glued together by the visual presentation.

Just my view though...

I'll let you know when someone releases a NASCAR and baseball game on the XBox 1. NBA2K14 looks great. Madden still looks good but not great, especially for a next-gen product.

I really haven't seen that much difference on the PS4. Yes its crispier and the clarity (1080) is more apparent than what I was used to on the PS3 but its not wow next gen yet.

Maybe because all the games that we have are currently on both generations? We'll see when The Show drops.

I'm only somewhat impressed with NBA 2K and Fifa's visuals so far. I think MLB the show will be exceptional. The other games like Madden, NBA Live, and Golf Club need to step it up big time.

I thought Madden had some improved detail. The AI is a little tighter on the next gen consoles.

NBA 2K looks real good as well as FIFA. I think The Show and UFC will be a notch or two better because of extra development time.

Battlefield 4 looks incredible. It makes the 360/PS3 version look like an Atari game.

Overall, I am pleased with the launch titles. Outlast and Dead Nation look awesome for arcade titles.
