For me, before FIFA I couldn't tell you the first thing about soccer.

All I knew is that people, who knows how many, ran around on a field and tried to score goals -- but they rarely did such a thing. How boring, or so I thought.

Then I played FIFA World Cup '98 way back in the day, and I got a sort of education on soccer. First, there was a lot more to this game than I once knew. Second, I wanted to know more.

So I watched the World Cup that year, and while yes there isn't much scoring -- I learned the games are fast and for the most part, fun. I am admittedly not a huge soccer fan still, but I do watch games from time to time whereas before the FIFA series I watched none. Thus the FIFA series has, over the years, turned me from a non-soccer fan into a casual soccer fan.

What about you? Has a game done a similar thing to you? Sound off by voting in our poll to your right on the frontpage and above you in the forums.

The Fifa franchise got me into soccer probably around 12 or so years ago. It took awhile but now I'm completely obsessed with the EPL and CL competitions.

Yes the game was Rugby World Cup 95 on the sega genesis it taught me the rules and I really appreciated the sport more. I am not a die hard fan but when I watch a game on tv I understand and enjoy it alot more.

NHL 08 changed my life I never cared for hockey and wouldn't even pay it any type of attention then during the 08 year I found myself bored with all my other sports games and decided to buy NHL 08 just because I was bored.
I knew nothing about the rules or how it worked but I quickly started to learn and became intrigued about the sport after playing and started watching a few hockey games Blackhawks of course and since then have become a avid fan Blackhawks fan and a lover of the hockey sport.

Im 16, I come from the middle east so football or soccer is the only sport here so its the only game i played or watched. Then i played nba 2k9 with KG on the cover then i got hooked on the sport of basketball and it became my favorite sport to play (real life and video games) and watch to this day. I used to hate american football and i never thought of trying to learn the game then.i.finally decided to try it out. I remember playing the Madden NFL 12 demo and loved it even though i know now it wasnt really a good game but back then i absoloutely loved it and started to watch and play americam football games whether it was NCAA or NFL.

Video games are basically why I started liking sports to begin with. Playing sports video games since I was like 5 or 6, playing those games, getting to know all the teams, the rosters, the rules of the game and everything, it really helped alot.

Yup! Tiger Woods convinced me to buy a $300 set of golf clubs and EA's old Rugby series got me interested in that sport.

Definitely.
NBA2K12 made me a fan of basketball.
I wouldn't label me a diehard, but I pay a lot more attention to it now than ever before.

And MVP2005 restored my love for baseball, which had been dormant for a few years.

Yes. I certainly liked basketball before NBA Jam 2000 but that game took that like and turned it into a love and passion I've had for the last 13+ years. Also I knew very little of WWE before Wrestlemania XIX for the Gamecube. I borrowed that game from a friend and loved it about six months later I watched my first Raw just to see how some of the characters acted on TV. I've been a WWE fan ever since.

This was the same for me but it was the 2k series basketball that turned me into a basketball fan. The presentation is really good in those games it's like actually watching an NBA game on TV. I really like the one last year that let you play those historic teams in different time periods. Like when you played with Bill Russell it would be black and white and also when you played with Dr. J it would be in panoramic view. I thought wow this is really cool I wish hockey would put this much polish in thier hockey game

NHL 98 got me really into hockey. I was a huge Eric Lindros fan. Now I'm obsessed with hockey. I help do the Ratings Revamped Rosters for the NHL series. Go Flyers!!

I was already a fan of basketball, but 2k made me love even more. Same with baseball, but to a much lower level

For sure, and it's my favorite sport -- American Football. I followed the NFL as a kid, but didn't really understand it. Even playing in the school yard, I didn't get downs and blitzes and why we'd have to throw the ball to the other team every few plays. I remember when I would watch football with my dad and ask him arbitrary questions like if you could only blitz once per set of downs, and he was like "No, you can blitz on every play..." and I thought like, well, that seems awfully unfair. Also I wonder if the other team had to count 5-mississippi's before running at the QB.

Then I got Madden '95 (I was about 10 or 11). I had played Joe Montana '92 and 93, and played NFL 94 and 95, but Madden '95 was when I first really began to appreciate 11 on 11 football. I got it for Christmas that year and was so frustrated, I basically hated the game at first because to me it seemed impossible. In NFL '94 you could throw any pass into the air and just "dive" with your WR and it'd be an automatic reception... You could also dive beyond the line of scrimmage on any play and they'd never call you for off sides, so you'd just dive and dive till you were behind the QB, and sack him... At the time, I thought this is what was fun about a football game, winning 100 to zero against the CPU and using cheap deep bomb to dive plays against my friends to be unstoppable. When I got Madden '95 for the Genesis I was so frustrated with how difficult it was and how I lost to the CPU over and over again, and then one day it clicked with me and I was running offenses -- rudimentary of course -- but working to a teams strength, running the ball instead of doing hail marys on every play, calling runs to set up the pass. And it clicked.

I picked up Madden '96 for the PC and it changed me -- within a year I knew almost every player in the league, and knew which teams were good and bad. By 97, 98, etc., I knew more about NFL players, who was good, who was a good rookie, and so on, than my dad did.

I'd also say, I understand the rules of Hockey because of NHL hockey games. I would have never understood offsides, icing, and so on, without hockey videogames. As a kid, I always turned off the rules because they frustrated me.. then with NHL 98 or so, one of the earlier ones for PSX, I decided I better learn how this works... ANd it added a lot more to the game. Sadly, Mario tennis taught me the rules of tennis.. I never understood the scoring system or why one hit was good and another was bad.

Basketball is one of the few sports that videogames did not enhance my knowledge of the game or make me a fan of. I've always been a basketball fan (playing ball and watching Choops), and oddly, it's one of the only sports games that I utterly do not enjoy.

Madden 10 was a christmas gift for me, and I was surprised since I expected another NBA game. I played it, and soon got hooked and began to watch the real NFL. Now I'm playing it and I'm a top 100 football player in Toronto.

Madden got me into football sad to say, not this gen but ps1 days and sega. It might have even been before that I just know playing the games tought me enough to understand the real nfl.
