Madden NFL 13 News Post

Kotaku's Owen Good has posted what Madden NFL 13 Connected Careers gives and takes away. He also spoke with Josh Looman on something they might add to the game.

Quote:
Looman, when I revisited this subject with him in L.A., told me that the development team was still on the fence about one meta-game feature in Connected Careers, which I pleaded with him to keep. In an early build, he told me that creative director Mike Young created himself as a 37-year-old journeyman quarterback, rated in the high-70s but with declining attributes. At that age, the XP spend to improve or maintain skills is also more expensive, creating a considerable challenge even at Pro difficulty. But Young gutted it out and was named Super Bowl MVP, in a great story of a veteran plucked from the scrap pile to win it all.

Shouldn't we have had a flipping awesome online and offline franchise by now? God, look at all the time wasted putting in back of the box features just to have them removed the very next year. It's a business decision to do this. There isn't much backlash when you have an exclusive license.

I am actually thrilled that online has taken a big step forward, even though I don't use it. But don't take out significant features AGAIN this year.
No doubt but I was just pointing out that that post you replied to did have merit, imo, directed towards those that have been content with "wait til next year" until they needed to "wait" for something they deemed vital for enjoyment. You still have people espousing a divide between offline and online gaming, in spite of the fact that is part of why "wait til next year" has been stated so much the last few years, imo.

This merger of modes should have taken place sooner but it definitely needed to happen, imo. I understand people couldn't care less about being reasonable and/or rational when they are upset but this merger makes it possible for more balance in upgrades for all multi-season gamers. Just imagine if the roles where completely reversed with Superstar mode or Online Franchise getting the lion's share of what little upgrades there were in the past few years, almost completely neglecting offline Franchise. Then suddenly this year, in order to merge all 3 modes, Superstar or Online Franchise Users, along with a few upgrades, had to be without options they had become accustomed to for at least one year due to compatibility issues but offline Users were finally able to access all the available features.

How do you think those accustomed to a bare bones offline Franchise mode, finally having access to features denied for years along with all the new features available, would look at that situation and what would they think about Superstar or online Franchise Users that have enjoyed access to features for years, now endlessly complaining about being without specific options for at least one year?

Right now EA is claiming that as a consequence of giving us all one combined mode, that will allow them to centralize resources for universal improvement instead of prioritizing 3 different modes each year, some options those playing offline have enjoyed and become accustomed to couldn't be included this year. So next year there is no excuse for those options from offline Franchise not being available for everyone using the new mode and if they are not, everyone that uses the mode should complain about OUR mode not being upgraded. However, at this point, it comes across more like offline Franchiser Users believe even one year is too long to be without those options, even though Superstar and online Franchise Users have endured through several ears of being without those options and a whole lot more.

The only way I would be against a combined mode would be if that creates unfair restrictions on a mode. Otherwise, I have absolutely no objections to it and like a lot of the things they seem to be adding to 13. You already know I have a pet peeve with progression. But so much in the physics engine and CC sounds interesting.

And I don't really have to imagine your scenario about roles being reversed. Offline franchise didn't get much until last year. And I've always wanted online franchise/leagues to get improvements. I expect online gamers to be thrilled right now.

And I'm basically against the business practice of remove, re-add and all the wasted time doing that. We shouldn't even be having this discussion in 2012/13. This game should have great modes and gameplay for everyone by now.

Agreed but at least CCM is a better blueprint for achieving a great mode for everyone, opposed to 3 separate modes, each requiring their own allocation of resources. I don't see CCM as "more of the same" at this point but a potential sea change for more options and features for everyone, going forward.

That said, if next year, that doesn't hold true, we all should be united behind OUR mode not improving, no matter how we choose to play it.

Thats a big step forward overall and long overdue. I'll be interested to see how EA decides to handle full editing and custom playbooks in the future. I really hope that EA will put all the features they took out back in and keep adding new features that could be turned on and off so that whether you're playing online or offline you can have choices in how you want to play.

There's been so much made of how things can be abused online that I hope EA uses some intelligent thought processes to work through the challenge of policing online without it affecting how offline can be played.

Please note that this isn't about offline vs online, its just thoughts on how anyone can enjoy both modes at different times if they chose and carry over the same experience.

From what I can tell, it's a one player game, if your not online?

thanks goodness for nba2k13 coming out~ I'm defiantly not excited about madden 13 coming out with less features! I will wait for madden 14. I find if I buy madden every 2 years I'm not as disappointed.

Josh Looman cares because, as he said in the videos, he wants connected careers to be a grind it out thing that the gamer doesn't cheat. That makes it more fun. But then again it is their game that they bought, they should be able to do what they want, whether it be challenging and fun or easy

I totally understand the need to combine all modes, for faster development purposes. I also understand that the vastness of that project does not leave time to implement everything in the first year. If those are the only reasons that some functionality was left out, and they bring that functionality back next year, then I'll be back next year. If not, I'll be playing Madden '12 in '14, too.
