I love me some text sims. Puts console sports games to shame in terms of realism.

I've always wanted to get a good text sim but my computer isn't exactly the most stable thing at times and until recently, I wasn't really into paying for things online.

Back when I was a big time wrestling fan I did play EWR religiously though. It was free so that was a huge bonus. Good times with that game.

Hate text sims. Boring as f***.

However, none of the poll answers allow me to answer correctly. I put No, but the reality is I bought 2 different versions of OOTP around OOTP 5 & 6 time frame, in an attempt to get into them (Since PC baseball was on it's deathbed). Hated it both years I bought it, and wont make that mistake again.

Give me The Show any day of the year.

anybody play Strat-O-Matic?

Of course. I've fired up Front Office Football 2007 again in the last month. I also check in on my OOTP league from last year's version of the game. I love text sims.

I miss Total Pro Football

Way way back in the day, ZX Spectrum anyone, I used to play numerous text based sports games. Most of these were soccer based such as Football Champions & The Double, but I also played those based on football, formula one & cricket. In those days, where hardware was severely limited, text based game were alot more involving than actual playable games.

Since the Megadrive era, where sport games took a big leap forward in term of visuals & authenticity, I have found text based games have lost their appeal. The last such game I tried out was Premier Manager on the PS1 but I found it just dull & rather boring.

Nowadays we are blessed with official licenses, broadcast presentation & ever realistic gameplay. These features are coupled with pretty solid Franchise modes that may not be as comprehensive as those found in the like of OOTP baseball, but with the ability to actually play the games, are far more rewarding & fun.

Been playing World of Mixed Martial Arts 3 since it came out. Love the series. Would buy the others by the company if I had a remote interest in wrestling or college sports.

The thing about text sims is someone can come over to my house and I can be 4 hours straight playing Fallout or NBA 2k and everyone will be like "OH IS THIS THAT ****?" and immediately take an interest. If I have football manager or wmma up and tried to explain it I'd just want to shoot myself in the face. A few friends have been shown the glory of text-sims though, the people who aren't big gamers actually have more of an interest when I bring them up. It's hard to explain why it's hard to explain.

Football Manager (soccer) is something i can't stop to play year after year. It's the king of text sims and nobody has come even closer to it specially the immersion factor with "alive" players.

In my rotation i have also

Pro Basketball: DDSPB2 (i was the graphical designer for it)
College Basketball: DDSCB, FBCB2
Baseball: OOTP11
American football: FOF2k7
College Football: BBCF
MMA: WMMA3
Wrestling: TEW2010

Text sims (along wargames) are my true passion and i would love to see the same depth in franchise modes in console games.

Hey Icy,

Do you have any roster mods for DDSCB, FBCB2, and OOT11?

I agree on FM11. Game is a beast of all sports games. The smart players add another dimenson to the game. I wish SI could make a College Football and College Basketball game like that. It would be HUUUGE.

The OOTP and Eastside Hockey Manager games tend to immerse you in the universes you create, moreso than most console games. Developing stars and tracking them right from high school (or junior teams) in both games provide the detail other games tend to lack. OOTP 11 for instance, flat out SPOILS you. Other "Dynasty" or "Franchise" modes don't even begin to compare, in my opinion.

Seeing as I tend to spend more time building my team than playing as them, I can definitely approach text-based sports games a bit more objectively. They're not for everyone, though. Text-based titles require a ton of patience and lead to a ton of frustration. They often come with a steeper learning curve than a "standard" sports title would. Combine that with the lack of "true" gameplay and these games make up a pretty underappreciated subgenre...as much as it hurts me to say that.

Strat-O-Matic baseball is my favorite game above all. The key with any text sim is to forget presentation, focus on realism. Strat's roots lie in its board game legacy. If Strat can work towards a version for iPad or smart phones, they could be onto something huge.

The article earlier this week discussing the difficulties ahead for sports gaming made me think "this is a great opportunity for text sims." As gamers grow older and their sight and reflexes start to go on them, they might like trying a text sim. Physically, it's a nice break. Mentally, it's a great workout.

Have FOF, OOTP10, and currrently rocking a 'Chise of the Clippers in DDSP:2.

Won a championship somehow in like year 4. Just signed Harrison Barnes to a max deal in Free Agency. The Heat won 1 Championship before breaking up. Lebron is now on the Blazers, Bosh went to the Magic, and Kobe joined Wade in Miami in his waning years.

Never have to worry about adjusting sliders with games like Strat.

I am really hoping that we will see a revival of these games. Funny, that someone said they are boring. Not for me, I can lose hours just looking at the numbers, history, and stories in games like OOTP and Strat.

Huge fan of text sim games. Currently playing FOF2007. Also play OOTP 2007 and Football Manager 2010 when I can. I plan on getting the new versions of both soon.

Yes: TEW. I love TEW. If the next one cost my first born... I'd have to make some life choices.

I wouldn't have a first born, that's for damn sure. I'm addicted to my TEW!
