Madden NFL 11 News Post

The NFL is now fining players for hitting too hard, which they say is essential towards keeping players safe and healthy in the league. While on the other hand, the same people making the rules are wanting to expand the regular season to 18 games. Is that a bit hypocritical?

In today's OS Poll we ask you guys: Are the rules changes in the NFL good or bad for the game?

This. In the words of Jack Lambert, we need to start putting skirts on quarterbacks.

I like the rules. BUT, that James Harrison to the chest of Fitzpatrick play isn't something I would have penalized.

Helmet to helmet is bad, so if you don't change helmet technology, lets limit the impacts.

It's terrible for the game. They are talking away part of the game, which we all love. It will become an offensive dominated game. The QB is turning into a kicked, where if they get touched its a flag. The only hits that shouldn't be allowed are the ones where people dive for a players knee, Aims for a players head or the ones were a player dives at a receiver in the air.

I really hate how hard hits are flagged and that when an offensive player ducks down and get hit in the helmet. It was the offensive player that caused the helmet to helmet hit.

Great for the players. Probably not for the game.

And in the end, the players are human beings. Keeping them healthy and brain damage free should be more important than fans wanting to see big hits.

I never knew that throwing punches on the field was just as bad as "roughing the passer". You can't hit them low, you can't hit them high, and now you can't hit them in the middle. Why doesn't the NFL just get rid of sacking the QB altogether?

Its a joke and most of the players agree with that! Helmet to helmet, flying through the air to hit someone is a different story. The game is becoming not as much fun to watch anymore imo. This will impact many things and I don't think the NFL realizes that!

So I guess the people who think it is bad for the game think that having players getting dementia when they get older is perfectly okay

Helmets were not designed to be used like projectiles, they are designed to protect you. You are always taught to use your body to tackle, not your head. Leading with your helmet and/or hitting someone in the helmet should not be permitted.

As far as the fighting goes, there should be suspensions handed out for fighting like that. Just because it's a sporting event doesn't mean it's not a crime.

Football is starting to become a thuggish sport.

Hines Ward is right......if its about safety, why add two more games?

# 11 infamyice @ 12/02/10 05:11 PM
Might as well play two hand touch

They're going to destroy this sport

But i guess they'll rely on marketing the product after watering down the league...

I dont know about anyone else, but I started playing football because I like contact...

Cant handle the sport, then don't get into it...

Whats next, stopping boxers from punching in the face?

Who cares about they're health after the sport?

People all over this country with less money have heath problems...

I rather feel sorry for them...

I agree that player safety is important but only to a certain extent. When you decide to play a contact sport such as football you assume the risks that come with playing that sport. Getting rid of much of the physicality involved hurts the integrity of the game, especially because it artificially inflates the offense at the expense of defensive players and what they have to do. I won't go as far as saying that the league is making the game into flag football per se, but I think that by eliminating and fining guys for certainly legal hits (not helmet-to-helmet since I think launching with your head is wrong) you're sending the wrong message to the players about how the game is supposed to be played.

Bad. Very Bad. That is all.

Roger Goodell is a joke. He is ruining the game. Only in the NFL can players have long hair that sticks out of their helmets but have to have their shirts tucked in and socks pulled up. No suspensions for the fight between Johnson and Finnegan? Are you kidding me? But hit the QB too hard and you're done for a game or two.

It is their choice and it's not for people who are scared to get hit or to hit. They know what they are getting into when the make it to the NFL. They make millions for it as well. The players themselves even state that.

Okay, it's peoples choice to smoke too, that doesn't make it right. And I'm sure all the college kids going into the NFL haven't even given a thought about getting any brain damage during their career.

And people need to realize that players safety is the #1 priority. Yea Johnson and Finnegan should be suspended, but the fact that they aren't proves what the NFL's priority. A fight like the Johnson Finnegan one isn't going to give either of them and brain damage. High speed head to head collisions will definitely give someone brain damage.. and that is what the NFL's priority is

I'm not sorry that I can't see as big of hits, jnes12eaglesfan. What I don't like is this means the defense has to be aware to let up a little bit more when taking on a ball carrier. This might result in not even making the tackle, let alone lightening up for it. This will add dominance to the offensive side of the ball, like we really need that anyway.

Plus, this takes away what makes some of the most iconic defenders so great. Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor, Bobby Urlacher, etc. They thrive on adrenaline and get jacked up in doing so. I don't think they should kill anybody, but now anyone's superlative efforts will only show up in the stat book and not on the field.

Football is and has been a rough sport. This poll is right, they might as well make them wear flags if they want to guarantee no players will be brain-damaged citizens after retirement. It's like... wearing a condom helps prevent pregnancy and STDs, but you can still get them.

See I have to disagree. Players don't have to let up. They need to change the way they tackle. On Asante Samuel's hit against the Giants that he got flagged and fined for, he could have aimed lower, and wrapped and took him down with force. He didn't need to go for that highlight reel "jacked up" tackle. It's things like that which needs to be changed. Yea these things were never looked at as dirty, but no one really though about the players after life in the NFL either. Bottom line is the players just need to c the way they tackle, not let up.

A long time ago they changed the rules that you couldn't tackled a player by his facemask and there was backlash for that, but the league survived. Then they outlawed cut blocks and the lineman got all upset, but now it isn't even thought about. Players can change the way they play, they have done it before
