Gold: FIFA Soccer 10
FIFA Soccer 10 was the culmination of several high-quality titles in the last decade for the FIFA series. While FIFA has not usually been up to the realism level of the Winning Eleven series, it has mixed extensive official licenses and modes with fun and somewhat balanced gameplay to mark its territory over the years. FIFA 10 was the best selling sports game of 2009 while receiving almost universal praise for its quality. With the addition of Ultimate Team later in the year, the game's replayability was bolstered by more than just the intensive Manager mode. Simply put, FIFA 10 was the ultimate soccer package of the last decade, and it's no surprise our staff has given it the Gold for being the best soccer game of the last decade.
Silver: Winning Eleven 5
The Winning Eleven series has been long connected with being one of the most realistic series in the history of sports gaming. While the series did not quite click initially on the current-gen consoles, Winning Eleven 5 debuted on the PS2 and became the forerunner for a series that went on to become one of the most impressive critical successes in sports gaming history. The game featured several national teams as well as several club teams, but the strength of the Winning Eleven franchise was its gameplay not its licenses. Winning Eleven 5 had impressive animations, physics and AI for its time. It was memorable for a lot of reasons, and in some ways it played better than the gold-medal winning FIFA 10 a full decade prior. That's why we've given Winning Eleven 5 the silver for setting the stage for a highly successful series.
