Gold: FIFA Soccer 10

FIFA Soccer 10 was the culmination of several high-quality titles in the last decade for the FIFA series. While FIFA has not usually been up to the realism level of the Winning Eleven series, it has mixed extensive official licenses and modes with fun and somewhat balanced gameplay to mark its territory over the years. FIFA 10 was the best selling sports game of 2009 while receiving almost universal praise for its quality. With the addition of Ultimate Team later in the year, the game's replayability was bolstered by more than just the intensive Manager mode. Simply put, FIFA 10 was the ultimate soccer package of the last decade, and it's no surprise our staff has given it the Gold for being the best soccer game of the last decade.

Silver: Winning Eleven 5

The Winning Eleven series has been long connected with being one of the most realistic series in the history of sports gaming. While the series did not quite click initially on the current-gen consoles, Winning Eleven 5 debuted on the PS2 and became the forerunner for a series that went on to become one of the most impressive critical successes in sports gaming history. The game featured several national teams as well as several club teams, but the strength of the Winning Eleven franchise was its gameplay not its licenses. Winning Eleven 5 had impressive animations, physics and AI for its time. It was memorable for a lot of reasons, and in some ways it played better than the gold-medal winning FIFA 10 a full decade prior. That's why we've given Winning Eleven 5 the silver for setting the stage for a highly successful series.

Readers' Choice: FIFA Soccer 10

FIFA Soccer 10 marks the best soccer game of the last decade according to both our staff and readers. Not only was the race a runaway among staff, but it was a huge landslide among readers, with FIFA 10 getting nearly 75 percent of the total votes. In short -- it wasn't even close.

Don't agree at all...the best soccer game ever to be released was PES5

While FIFA 10 was good I hated the MM budget glitch. It wasnt an option but I would of voted for FIFA World Cup 06. I played that game non stop.

For me both PES5 and PES6 are still ahead of what FIFA is producing today in terms of gameplay.

FIFA has improved dramatically over the last few years and has rightly positioned itself above the PES series on new-gen consoles but for me the quality of football games is mainly in the gameplay and PES 5 and 6 just had it right. The feeling of scoring a goal in those PES games still feels better than it's FIFA counterpart today and that is down to the feeling of passing, crossing and shooting, something the PES series in its final days on current-gen consoles had down to a tee.

The comments have it right. PES5 (Winning Eleven 9 here in the states).

The one thing holding it back is the lack of licences. Without options files, the game loses some of its luster.

It is a joke, just like when Madden 09 was voted as the best sports game by the OS crew. I called sell out and I'll call it again because there's no way FIFA 10 was that great. Just goes to show how badly the definition of a 'soccer game' has warped over the years.

PES5/PES6 hands down. I give the topic credit though for listing WE5, good job there - I remember playing that game on the corner market on the dusty streets of Jakarta.

Madden 09 (next gen) was one of the worst Maddens I have ever played. FIFA 10 was pretty good, but best ever? I have more fun with Football Manager.

Was just about to say this, Football Manager needs more respect. After playing FM11 for a month, i still can not stop playing it.

It's the best value for your gaming dollar out there. But it's too hard for the casual player to get into and doesn't have the mass appeal of a live-action game.

Spot on, CM/FM is a series of games that i've been playing for nearly 20 years but over the years the game has become more and more complicated and time consuming (and rightly so) but that can make it hard for a newcomer to the series to really get into it. Still a fantastic series of games from Sports Interactive though.

In terms of the whole CM/FM Series a lot of people put CM01/02 as the greatest game of the series. I would say that the latest FM's are far better but 01/02 is a game that I still play and really enjoy to this day.

So who were the readers that voted for Fifa 10? Very lost here, I haven't been on operation to much as of late.
