Today's poll question centers around your gaming habits. Given that more and more companies are considering DLC as a way to boost revenue we are interested just how valid their claims might be for sports gamers. Thus: How long do you play each sports game you buy?

You can vote in the poll on the right side of the page or you can click here to go to the thread to vote.

the only sports games I buy now are the yearly basketball games because every other sport game usually only gets played for a few weeks then untouched until the finals/championship/superbowl.

The exception to this for me is Backbreaker.

I voted for more than 9 months.

This is the first time that will happen. I have been playing MLB 10 the show since its release date. This game is so addictive. With Knights and other community rosters I cant turn this game off. I'll be playing this until the release of MLB 11.

Almost a full year, NHL gets played year around online. My Ncaa 08 dynasty took 2 whole years to finish (although i havent bought NCAA since), and I can see myself playing NBA2k11 well into 2011

Usually a year. But, if I just can't get into it I bring it back within 4-9 months. I just returned Madden & MMA today and picked up NBA Jam because I just got bored with them.

I usually play until the next game in the series is released. I played FIFA 10 until FIFA 11 was released (skipped the world cup game), and I'll play FIFA 11 until FIFA 12 arrives.

The only few exceptions in the last couple of years have been Madden 10 (4-5 months) and Madden 11 (less than a month).

It depends on the quality of the game and how much I like that sport. Fifa probably gets the most play at the moment, around 9 months.

I buy almost only sports games. I usually only play them for the current season, though the great ones I play for several years (Front Page Sports Football 97 on PC, High Heat Baseball 2002 on PC, NHL then NHL 04 on Sega, NFL 2k5 on Xbox and 360, NHL 2k7 on 360).

I also had a HH2002 (or was it 2001?) dynasty going forever and ever. Whichever version was the one that wouldn't run under Windows XP. I kept an old piece of garbage PC around for years just because it had Windows 2000 on it and could run High Heat. I think I played four or five full 162 game seasons over a 6-7 year period without ever simming anything. Great game.

Anyways, I didn't vote in the poll because it all depends on the individual game. Like I said above, High Heat lasted me 6+ years of somewhat regular use. A buddy of mine kept his Sega Genesis hooked up forever just we could revisit our saved seasons from NHL96... we were still occassionally playing that well into the x360 era. I played Madden 08 (PC Version) for 2+ years. I've played about four full seasons of NHL09 over the last 2+ years as well. But various versions of the NBA / MLB 2K series have only lasted me 3-4 months a piece before I'm bored with them. Madden 11 will probably also last somewhere around 3-4 months total before I retire it.

So it's all dependant on the title, but I usually last longer with hockey / baseball games then other sports.

Depends on the quality

# 10 milesizdead @ 11/16/10 02:03 PM
The whole year thanks to EASHL. Without it, probably about 3 months.

# 11 jonpt @ 11/16/10 02:03 PM
More the 9 months for me. The only sports game I buy are baseball games the past few years. So I usually play the Show all year round.

# 12 bh446066 @ 11/16/10 02:26 PM
I've kept games as long as 6 years in the past....so I guess my answer is "longer than 9 months".

# 13 statum71 @ 11/16/10 02:56 PM
I play my sports games by the actual season. So mostly 4 to 6 months for me.

# 14 Rod_Carew29 @ 11/16/10 03:12 PM
I ONLY buy SCEA's games....

I play a current year's game until just after the new game is releases...

I dont' get my Franchise going until usually June. It takes me that long to get the edits, placements and additions of players into the game on their correct teams.

I continually revise all teams' rosters while I play into the winter (as I'm doing now). Usually my game season will end in December or January....

I'll go into year #2 in my Franchise and play until just after the new game comes out....

I play my games for years. One due to budget, two due to finishing multiple seasons and getting the most out of a game.

MVP 05 until I got MLB 09. (Did dabble with MLB 2k6)
Madden 06/NFL 2k5 until I got Madden 10/APF 2k8.
NHL 2k7 until I got NHL 2k10. I did break the trend and got NHL 11, which I plan on playing for years.

From 2003 until 2006, I bought NFL, NHL, and MLB sports games every year. Then I realized I was wasting money because I wasn't fully playing the games I had paid 50-60 bucks for. Plus, the next edition wasn't usually that much better. Now that I play games for 2, 3, 4 years at a time, by the time the new game comes out, it's ALL new instead of a few tweaks here or there. And I can spend that saved money elsewhere.

It's a bit amazing to me people shell out 60 bucks for a game and only play it for 3 months, especially sports games because they're so replayable. Then again, maybe that's their downfall.

2K hoops games I play from release to release. PES 2011 will probably be the same this year and hopefully going forward.

All of the EA games (Madden 11, NCAA 11, and FIFA 11) died real quick for me this year.

You and I are very similar. I used to update Madden every year until the 2005 version came out. I played that till 2007 came along and then played 2007 till 2010. I broke that trend and picked up 2011 and unless 2012 does the franchise overhaul 2011 will be my NFL football game until another Madden or other NFL football title blows me away with offline franchise depth.

Baseball I played MVP 2005 till The Show 2009 and continue to play 2009 the Show and I see myself doing so till the 2012 version comes along.

NCAA Football - I played 2007 till this years 2011 version and don't see myself stopping till at least the 2013 version. I used to update this every year and stopped after the 2004 version. I did not buy another till 2007. This years game is amazing and has years of replay value.

NHL - Very hit or miss for me. I played 2007 (XBOX) then got 2009 (PS3) now upgraded to 2011 and I don't see myself getting another hockey title for years.

NBA - Played NBA Live 2005 till NBA 2K11. I dabbled in 2K9 but was turned off (only paid 20 bucks for it). 2K11 will be my last B-Ball title for this gen no doubt.

Boxing - FN4 was my first boxing game since Knockout Kings 2001. It was and still is an amazing game. However I am very curious and pumped about FNC and the new Champion mode and Legacy upgrades as well as a new control scheme

Golf - I have yet to get a new Tiger Woods Golf for PS3 and still play my PS2 2005 Tiger Woods. everything I have read says TG 2009 is the way to go thus far....but I am still in no rush

College Hoops - CH2K8 - It is the only College B-Ball game I have ever
owned and will own.

Tennis - Only have Top Spin for XBOX and am looking to upgrade to Top Spin 4 next year.

So I am one who really plays the heck out of my sports titles. I learned around 2002-2003 there is no reason to update sports titles that have franchise modes every year. I am 2-3 year cycle game buyer. And I also never buy sports games that are 1st or 2nd gen versions for a new system. I like to give Dev's time to learn and realize the full potential of the new gen cpu they have at their disposal. Usually by year 3 of a new gen console the titles really hit their stride.

So on the horizon the only new sports games on my radar are:

Fight Night Champions
Top Spin 4
Madden 2012
Tiger Woods (just need to figure out the best version for the $$)

I am also pretty patient with my non core sports games (College hoops I bought for 7 bucks, Tiger Woods for 10 bucks etc) So I can wait on these titles till the price really comes down. I don't see myself getting FNC, Top Spin or a Tiger Woods for a while so i will get them used or new but at half or more off the price. I am only willing to pay full retail for Football, Baseball and NBA Basketball. NHL I have bought used every time. I picked up NHL 11 for 34 bucks used and the online code was good too!

I typically play it until the next one comes out next year. I mean literally.

On and off during offseason months, sure, but I'll kept playing NBA 2K10 right up until 2K11 came out. Though I hardly touched it May-July, but that was just cuz I was hooked on Red Dead Redemption at the time.
