Golf is one of those sports where feel plays an integral role in your success on the course. The way your hands feel on a grip may be an important factor in how far your hit your tee shots. If your hands are comfortable on the grip, combined with your swing speed, you can pipe drives down the fairway.
Putting is all about reading the greens correctly, but if your touch is off you’ll miss the putt anyway. So judging your power on putts is just as important. And then you have the short game, which is truly an art in terms of having the right amount of touch. A chip can be the difference in either having your ball roll up inches short of the hole or well past it.
Ball physics are excellent in PGA Tour 2K23 and the short game is one of the best ways to showcase that. Sure, some greens may seem fast and a bit unfair at times on pitches and chips, which may make you think the ball physics suck, but they’re two different things. If the greens are fair, the ball physics will reward you for having good touch on the sticks and it’s very satisfying. If you want to achieve that level of satisfactory around the greens, then here are a few tips to help you with your short game in PGA Tour 2K23.
Think Soft Not Hard On Chips
So, it’s good to have a balance here. Sometimes it is good to hit your chips a little harder in PGA Tour 2K23 but definitely think soft first. It’s a much safer bet as a lot of greens will have that ball rolling a little faster than you’d like.
Speaking of the greens, you do have to take the course that you’re playing into account as well. A course like TPC Scottsdale is going to play softer so the ball won’t roll as far if you chip it a little harder but it still may go a bit too far for your liking.
Meanwhile, on a course like the Renaissance Club, those greens will send your ball on a roller coaster if you aren’t careful. This is a great example of a course where you definitely want to “think soft” with your chips if you end up green-side. In short, keep the courses that you’re playing in mind, but in general softer is typically the better bet even if the result is a little disappointing.
Flop Shots Are Your Friend
I might be a little biased here as the flop might be my favorite shot in golf. There’s a certain art to it that you can’t help but appreciate. That said, it can be a very effective weapon in PGA Tour 2K23. When you’re within range, definitely feel free to give it a try.
What makes the flop shot so powerful is that, if you have the right amount of power on that thing, the ball could end up right next to the flag. You don’t have to worry about it rolling too far away or anything like that because you automatically apply backspin to the shot so the ball ain’t really going anywhere.
It works very well in place of pitch shots depending on how close you are to the flag. Pitch shots are great but don’t add that automatic backspin like the flop shot does. Judge the power properly and you’ll probably have a tap-in putt on your hands.
Read The Green Just Like With Putting
One thing that’s easy to do on chips, flops, and pitches is to simply hit them without reading the slope of the greens. Don’t get me wrong, you can still have some success even with this straightforward approach but reading those greens make things even better.
This is especially true when it comes to chips. How many times have we just hit a chip, only for the ball to curl to the right or left of the hole? Readjusting yourself to align with the slope can give you a much higher chance for your ball to drop in the cup, just like with putting.
A good read and solid touch will lead to some great things when in a short-game situation. As I mentioned earlier, there are times where reading the green isn’t necessary but there’s a lot of times where it is as well. Chipping isn’t putting, but it’s pretty darn close.
