It looks like the EA mystery game is NBA Jam, according to Jon Robinson, at ESPN. What are your thoughts?

Quote:
"When EA Sports community manager Alain Quinto tweeted back in December that EA execs were preparing to announce a new game, the rumors and speculation spiraled out of control. Was EA going to steal the WWE license from THQ? Is "MVP Baseball" coming back? Is a new sport like lacrosse finally going to break through with an NCAA licensed game? To make it simple, no, no, and no.

Instead, sources confirmed to ESPN that the new title is actually one of the all-time classics coming back to consoles as EA Sports is set to deliver an updated version of "NBA Jam" that will ship to retail exclusively for the Wii."

There's some confusion in my head right now. I know Midway made NBA Jam, and obviously, Midway bit the big one. It says on Wikipedia that THQ bought Midway San Diego and "old sports titles". EA Sports isn't even in the paragraph on Wikipedia.

So is this a spiritual successor of NBA Jam, or something branded NBA Jam? I'm just... confused.

And why just for Wii? This boggles my mind.

The best news in this article is:

Quote:
EA has not only hired Turmell to work on upcoming sports games (would love to see him also bring back "NFL Blitz"), he's already been brought to their Vancouver studio to help consult on the new "Jam." Sources also claim that Turmell isn't the only old-school "Jam" vet being brought back into the mix, which makes me wonder if EA will also hire the voice of the original game, Tim Kitzrow, to once again unleash phrases like "Boomshackalacka!" and "He's on fire!"

This is only for the Wii?

Does EA know that "NBA Jam" would be a nostalgic type of game for us "older" gamers? I am sure the kiddies would like it too, but come on.

Pretty disappointed here. Looks like they will not be getting my money in this department.

Something like this belongs on the Live Marketplace and PSN Store. Not exclusively to the Wii. NBA Jam was never meant to be played with motion controllers. That just kills it.

Give it some time and I'm sure it will come.

I doubt EA would have hired-on Turmell and some other members of the Jam staff if they were just planning on putting out a single Wii game.

If we are lucky, these guys will take over the bland "arcade" series that EA's trotted out for NHL and Madden.

I hope they realize that the kiddies do not know what NBA JAM is.

Just bring JAM to the PS360.... and make it for adults.

Please.

This is actually a really good point.

A lot today's gamers weren't even born when the first Jam was taking up a record amount of quarters in the arcade.

Heck, most of them have probably never even been to a real arcade in their life since most of those places shut down around the turn of the century.

C'mon...do you people really think this will stay on Wii? EA SPORTS, as a 3rd party publisher, won't piss off Sony and Microsoft by not letting them get their hands on this...at least eventually. With Sony and Microsoft getting behind their online platforms like offline doesnt matter, they crave titles like this. Big names, big licenses, big time loyalty. What could be a better downloadable sports game?

Maybe it comes out first on Wii, but i fully expect next-gen to get this when its ready. Or maybe it will come out on all 3 at the same time - we will await official word from EA and go from there. Either way, i am very excited!

Already contemplating my team -
Dwight Howard + Vince Carter (holy crap thats unstoppable!!!!!!!!)
Dwight + Rashard Lewis
Lewis + Vince (its raining 3s!!!)
Jameer Nelson + Vince (razzle dazzle)

I'd love a NBA Jam game but for the Wii? Not cool.

Well it is their year for an arcade basketball title (though i don't know if midway even makes them anymore)

Also, maybe its not coming to PS3/360 because those consoles are getting a new NBA Street and they decided to give the Wii NBA Jam instead of a weak Street port.

# 16 jyoung @ 01/04/10 11:59 PM
Simple: Madden Arcade isn't a classic game; NBA Jam is.

And people would obviously buy it for the chance to play online, which is something we haven't been able to do since the days of Xband.

I remember playing the hell out of NBA Jam on SNES with friends...we'd use the hidden codes to unlock players like Bill Clinton, Mark Turmell, and other random guys...

I'd be interested for the nostalgia factor, but you guys are right. This was kinda popular when I was 12....Most younger gamers have no clue what it is.
