News Post

After months of rumors, speculation, and close calls, Electronic Arts and Take-Two have officially ended discussions about a possible merger between the two companies.

EA and Take-Two have been in talks for months, but recent rumors about negotiations falling apart added credence to a breakdown in talks among the two video game giants. Also, in August EA pulled back from its hostile pursuit of Take-Two, and instead began private discussions with Take-Two.

Clearly, the private discussions did not go according to plan if the final stage of this saga has ended without a merger between the two companies. At any rate, this has been the sports video game tease of the 21st century.

I don't think it was EA's intention to come correct with this deal and they were just trying to collect Take Two for cheap.

Let's just hope we don't see an NBA exclusive license anytime soon....... or later............

look, I was one that saw at the deal as slam dunk. Looking at how Take Two was run, the effect EA's bid had on their stock price, how TT opened up to a deal, and how badly EA wanted them made it look like it would happen. Even numerous financial sources not named Michael Patcher believed it would happen, as recently as a few days ago...

I understand everyone's joy here, as their sports games come out for another year. However, you do realize that so far all we know is that EA only walked away from the formal offer and merger talks. That doesn't mean they gave up on going back to just buying up shares without giving a damn about a mutual deal. Until EA specifically says they will cease buying Take Two shares, and sell off the 20% or whatever it was they had acquired, they could still end up with the majority of the company. Just walking away will hurt TT shares, which are already down to like $21. EA could actually still get a majority of TT cheaper than their initial offer was going to cost them for the whole company.

That is terrific news. Had this happened I would have given up video sports games all together as I feel 2k does a much better job of representing sports. After seeing what VC did with the NBA and now Hockey I can only dream about what a wonderful football game we would have right now. Oh well, at least we will still have a choice..........

How is this great news. To me it seems that Take 2 should've let them do it. I mean the stop making College Hoops & APF. CH didn't want to spend money on the deal with the NCAA. It seems they "didn't" have the money to spend. THey paid all that money for the ledgends in AP and for what?

Yes, they still have GTA but, how often do those games come out? NBA and NHL 2k are still solid games. Although Live is starting to close (still far away from 2k's game) the gap between the two. NHL 09 looks to be crushing 2k's NHL game. IMO I think they should've gone ahead and let it happen.

I guess I am being optimistic about the entire thing but, hey that's why I play the games and am not in the video making field.

Whatever happens I hope it all works out for "us" gamers. I know most feel like the deal not going through help us but, I guess we'll see.

Even if the offer was still 2 billion, it wouldnt have gotten done.
You have to ignore that quote, he hates everything 2k and was praying that the take over would happen. Oh well it's bad news for him and great news for sports video gaming. I'm so happy 2k didn't give in. I could not imagine having my basketball choice being NBA Live...............

Exactly, some people want to make up reasons why it did not happen but you spoke the truth. I can't believe some people actually wanted this to happen. I'm so happy 2k didn't give in. I could not imagine having my basketball choice being NBA Live...............

I think EA's "private talks" consisted mostly of low-balling efforts as their original offer was based on the anticipation of GTA IV's release. Regardless, I'm glad it didn't happen as competition can only result in good things for sports gamers.

Guys....trust me on this...

EA DID NOT lowball Take Two.
Most analysts said anything over TWENTY DOLLARS was too much.
They were practically throwing money at TT...

But they had to realize that there was going to be a football game vacuum, and if they could corner at least one major spectrum of the football crowd, they could garner stronger sales numbers than they had previously.

But, you're right. They wanted "to[sic] much money".

Hey...how much did they pay for those legends? Because I can still find twenty five first print and factory sealed copies of APF at my local GameStop. Your idea of too much is skewed, obviously.

But 2K people quickly bag on just how garbage Live is. And I love NBA 2K8. But don't somehow skew it like you honestly are invested in strides unless it has to do with reppin' you gaming company.

That shows the inherent bias as to why you could say that this decision is completely positive. For sports gamers, sure. Better for them. I would make the argument that 2K Sports has developed a solid football title, a solid basketball franchise, and garbage hockey franchise, and a ****ing disgusting excuse of a baseball game. Blind ******** bats could make a better baseball game than the chumps at 2K.

But those other gaming franchises, the Bioshock's, the GTA's...those games would become even better with the power of EA behind them...as would those studios. And, to be honest...that's where this deal hurts Take Two. The fact that their company is in the **** should say enough. Upper management still has a chance to kill that company.
