Starting in March, Operation Sports' Best Sports Game Tournament started with 64 legendary sports video games. After tons of head-to-head matches, thousands of votes, and a touch of controversy, NFL 2K5 has come out victorious - beating College Hoops 2k8 95-51.

NFL 2K5's road to glory started by beating NHL '95. Other victories over Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football, Blades of Steel, Mike Tyson's Punchout and Baseball Stars got the celebrated football game to the final match.

For a recap of the tournament, check out the Results and Discussion thread in the OS Forums. Final brackets are also available.

Congrats to 2K Sports and NFL 2K5!

Not a surprise, I think it's well deserved. Now if this tournament could somehow aid in getting the NFL to reassess their current licensing agreement I'd be a happy man. boy NFL 2k10 sounds good to me, the possible prospect of NFL 2k15...not so much

It's a great game, however the nfl license is done, never to come back ever. For one, internet polls are done by a small minority of fans. Then there's the whole issue of EA eventually buying Take Two.

ugh, that made me shudder. Although the tone of my original post might be mistaken for naivete I'm afraid I agree with you on this point, for the sake of gamers worldwide though, I hope we're both wrong!

Not surprising at all. I guess there weren't enough of us old-timers to get Tecmo Super Bowl the crown.

dunno - makes you wonder what APF would have been like if they just took NFL 2k5, updated the graphics, created fictional teams and put the legends on those teams.

APF with NFL 2k5's franchise mode might have been a juggernaut.

It baffled me why they didnt do that.
  • Change NFL to APF
  • Change ESPN to 2K Sports Network.
  • Replace Berman,Kiper, Wingo and Suzy with fictional people if you couldn't sign them.
  • Change SportsCenter to 2k Sports Tonight.
  • Keep the teams in the right cities, just change the mascot and uniform colors.
  • Keep the combine and the draft.
  • Fix some of the bugs in franchise mode.
  • Add the gameplay enhancements of APF and better graphics and call it day.

NFL 2k5 is definitely worthy. Still play it to this day ... and more importantly, it still amazes me. Obviously, it doesn't have everything down and it's not a perfect game (no game is, as cliche as it sounds), but it was a benchmark in its genre of gaming and deserving (as well as a couple other games) of being the #1 game.

I hope that the people at 2K will see this. And develop APF 2K10.

I've learned that many times, the things that make the most sense, are often the ones that are the most ignored.

Their excuse was that they didn't want to anger the NFL by doing something very very close to an NFL game. Also it'd be hard to do a franchise with players who could be 40 years old in the game.

There have been tons of threads on that though, so this probably isn't the best place.

see i don't buy this. we're all ready suspending disbelief pretending Earl Campbell and John Elway could play on the same team. Why not just take each player and put him in the game as of his best year? Some guys are 25. Some guys are 30. Some are 35. And let the franchise play out from there.

As for the NFL - bah! They took the license and millions in revenue from you. You should feel free to make it back regardless of whether it makes them unhappy.

NFL 2K5 winning this award is like Kobe winning the MVP, it doesn't really deserve it, but it gets the nod based on sympathy votes.

College Hoops 2K8 is by far the better game.

A majority who voted say otherwise. Sympathy would be offered for a sad affair or predicament. NFL 2K5 players know that they were voting on what the game is and what it brings, even to this day....not lamenting what could have been.

What is sad is that 2K5 will probably still be the best NFL football game around when it comes time to re-up with the NFL once again.

Sympathy votes? I beg to differ. I think NFL 2K5 recreated the NFL in ways that have yet to be matched. College Hoops lacks some flash IMHO. I honestly would give the nod of greatest sports game ever to hacked TSB on NES with new rosters and changeable plays, but that's a discussion for another thread.

I have been preaching this since the nfl thing. I even emailed them and told them.

CHoops 2K8 > NFL 2K5, probably.

However....

NFL 2K5 in the year 2004 > CHoops 2K8 in the year 2007

Sympathy? NFL 2k5 was great in 04, 05, 06, 07, 08 while CHoops 2k8 just 08. And I personally just think the nfl game represents its sport better especially with its atmosphere/presentation.

Listen to you sounding like an old man. Your dad had one of them old pong games...I am so old, I had one of them pong games.

You know, 2k5 was like the Jordan era Bulls. Remember when the Pistons were the beast of the east, but little by little the Bulls were coming on and you just knew they were going to be great, and sure enough they did?
Well, playing the 2k games prior to 2k5 (except the Dreamcast versions) there was a sense that this title was going to be great someday, and sure enough 2k5 reached that great stage. 2k5 was finally better than its competitor (imo) so there wasn't a reason to even buy the other game. 2k5 was the champ in my book.

The sad difference is that we were able to see the Bull's greatness extend to 5 more championships, not end abruptly after the first.

I personally think that NFL 2k5 is overrated in a similar way to John F. Kennedy, the whole "died before their time" aspect makes people forget their flaws...

I suppose the rabid fans kinda turn me off of that game as well. The way some people talk it sounds like if you put the game in your pants it does "magic"...

Congrats on winning though!

Never liked 2k5. But LOVED APF 2k8.
