GamesIndustry has the details.

"Publisher Take-Two is feeling the wrath of its shareholders as its two biggest owners of stock have massively reduced their stakes in the company, while a shareholder lawsuit has demanded that stockholders have the right to elect directors at the company's annual meeting.

The publisher's largest shareholder Oppenheimer Funds has halved its stake in the company from 23 per cent to 11.5 per cent, or 8.8 million shares, reports Reuters. "

It basically means the end is near for Take Two. It's shareholders want the right to elect new board members which are presumably ones that would be open to a buy out from EA (or another company).

This looks like it's following the exact blueprint as far as hostile take-overs are concerned. We'll see if Take Two can even hold out until the GTA release in April.

THIS SUCKS.

I'd even say that TT's stock is already inflated by GTA4, so the release and success of the game will do nothing for them now. The stock went up a little when the buyout news hit, and it'll go down if they refuse to sell to EA. Add that to the management putting in contract clauses to benefit their wallets greatly when a new buyer takes over, and the shareholders are getting pissed off.

I'd be surprised if Take Two can hold off for a few more weeks even.

It's just a matter of time before Take-Two takes its last take. I'm telling you, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see an NBA 2K9 or even APF 2K9 ... For me, it will be no surprise if I wake up one day and the company has either folded or been bought out. EA will obviously be at the forefront of all this, but for those 2K diehard fans, be prepared to make a big change. For me, it could be the end of the road. I'm actually at peace with it all, I know that it won't be the worst thing in the world, but rather, a chapter closed .. with a new one ready to open.

No new chapters, just EA's continued path to own what Microsoft doesn't.I'm at peace with the whole thing as well honestly.I love 2K for what they have brought to the table, but I played EA since I started gaming so the change won't really have much of an effect on me.I would like to see Microsoft bring back their Sports series so we could once again have the choice.I know that's not likely though.

If EA takes control of Take Two, then not only will it be a "bye bye" to the only games I care to play anymore, but possibly to OS as well (for me anyway). I think the only game I would play at that point would be MLB the Show and Saints Row 1 and 2(when it comes out). The only other games I play are Oblivion(2k), NBA 2K8(2K), GTA(2K) and some games on the Wii w/ my 10 yr old.

Let's all remember. This does not have to be the end. We can keep playing 2K's games for years to come, even if they are old!!!

Maybe you should do the same?

On the 2K forums Blue Lightning ( employed by 2K ) has said that APF has not been canceled and that they are still weighing their options.

That was also reported here.

BOYCOTT EA!
Is there anyway EA could get taken to court for being a monoply or something? This is going to be the worst day of my life.

If EA acquires Take Two before the 29th, is anything with GTA4 going to change?

# 14 Goffs @ 03/13/08 08:43 PM
^^ i doubt it...they will continue on whatever they were doing and just wait for the cash to flow

Doubtful. Remember they bought Bioware about a month before Mass Effect's release and they couldn't do anything to Mass Effect, only it's sequels.

Which would be in their best interest.

Kind of. I normally don't get excited over video game releases, but I would flat out lying if I said I wasn't jacked over the release of this game. Even the thoughts of EA owning Rockstar make me less excited about GTA. Even if they change nothing, it still makes me feel less enthused about GTA4.

This is the way 2K ends

Not with a game, but with a GOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLE

Don't worry about GTA IV, or any of the GTA games. Rockstar is safe.

I ****ing hate EA. Can we expect a rushed, yearly additions of GTA from now on?

As echoed by other OS'ers on this thread, I'm actually at peace with the inevitable end of Take Two and 2K Sports. Since the NFL exclusivity deal went down, sports gaming has been on an inexorable denouement toward this moment, which will end when EA owns every major sporting IP and locks up exclusive deals with all major (and minor) pro and college sports. It was just always going to end this way.

In the past, gaming companies seem to have existed with a tenuous, implied gentlemen's agreement wherein they would not attempt to corner the market by buying up exclusive rights to leagues, and sports leagues had no real incentive to grant exclusive licenses because the market wasn't as big as it is today, and they didn't have a real concept of how important videogames were (or would become) to their brand. Once it became apparent that EA could turn "Madden" into a brand that actually accounted for a big chunk of the NFL's annual revenue, the wheels started in motion and the beginning of the end for sports gaming was at hand. Only now do we see just how tenuous the agreement between sports leagues and the multiple gaming companies who bought licenses really was. In the end, sports games are victims of their own success (or the success of one particular game, anyway).

I guess I'm at peace with it all because, as I stated earlier, it became increasingly apparent over the past several years that this is where it was all headed, and with each passing year, another IP bit the dust, and the anger/incredulousness over the reduction in available sports games got just a little less intense. The intense feelings I had when the NFL exclusive deal was first announced seems so long ago; at this point, I've just accepted the halcyon days of sports gaming are over. There's no sense in getting angry or upset about it any longer; EA is going to equal sports gaming, and no amount of feeble resistance by sports gamers like us is going to do anything about it.

For my part, I'm keeping true to my vow I made 4 years ago, that I would never buy another EA product (until the NFL exclusivity deal was up, which apparently means I will never buy another EA product period); not that I thought it would make a difference, but I felt hypocritical criticizing those funding the EA machine whilst myself contributing to it. Frankly, it hasn't even been the least bit difficult to keep to that promise - I haven't even been tempted in the past 4 years. With each passing year, I care less and less and play less and less of all my games, but the sports game especially. Maybe I'm just getting older, busier, or more distracted by other diversions, but as B.B. King once said, the thrill is gone. EA's killed it. Forums like these, once bastions for (semi) intelligent sports gaming discussion and the sounding board for comparisons of one football game to another (or basketball, or hockey, etc.), will cease to be as lively when there's only one game to discuss for each sport. That's a darn shame.

In the end, the business of games has just gotten too big, and now it's no longer the niche pastime where developers and gamers shared a fairly close and open dialogue and companies tried to make the best games possible. Of course they were always about the bottom line, but how they achieved that was formerly so much more "gamer-focused", for lack of a better term. Now, it's about commodifying game franchises at the expense of anything else but profit. It happens in every successful industry, eventually. EA is the Clear Channel of videogaming - and we all know what happened to radio once Clear Channel rose to prominence...

Keep gaming and have fun; I'm not trying to chastise, criticize, or start an argument. Just wanted to relieve myself, once and for all, of the last vestiges of b*tching I had left in me about the inevitable death of the wild-west innovation in sports gaming that used to exist not more than a few years ago. Thanks for letting me vent...
