The middle school basketball team I'm coaching had our first game last night. We got smoked 27-8. The gym we played in was very small, had bad lighting, and those double rims that have no give. My team shot horrendously, and I think the gym could be partly to blame. Hopefully, on our home court they'll do better. I have 13 kids and I try to get them all playing time, so they all end up unhappy because they lost and they didn't get to play enough. Could be a long year...

QOTD: Not much at all. Watching the Browns game is the only thing set in stone (and playing some 360).

How old are the kids you're coaching?

6th through 8th grade (plus one 5th grader who is big for his age). It's tough because there is such a difference in size and skill between the kids. Last year, I was an assistant for a team of 8th graders and they were much easier to coach.
Getting all of the kids playing time follows the general philosphy of the school, so I'm going to try to stick with it. It's tough with 13 kids, and I've already had a parent tell me "You can't win playing 13. You need to establish a 7 man rotation." I have a feeling he's going to be a thorn in my side all season.

QOTD: We're going to a resort in the Pocono mountains with my wife's family to celebrate my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. 16 of us in all, including 7 kids. Should be fun.

That is the major reason I'd never coach kids. Parents and playing time issues.

Last year, my team was a CYO team and they had a minimum playing time rule, which really helped eliminate a lot of parent complaining. The league this year does not have a similar rule, but probably needs one.

QOTD:
Working tonight, doing play-by-play for a 2nd round NC High School football playoff game.

Tomorrow, I work again, network studio hosting for the Cal-Washington game.

Sunday, I chew on my fingernails all day, awaiting the Sunday Night Buffalo-New England game. My enthusiasm for this game was completely sucked dry when Marshawn Lynch was ruled out of the game. I'm just hoping my boys can keep it close and make it look respectable.

QOTD: I finally have a good chunk of free time now that Thanksgiving break is here, so I won't have to worry about essays, projects, or reporting assignments. That means a lot of gaming: COD 4, Halo 3, NBA 2k8, and maybe even some NCAA.

Saturday I'll be watching my Tigers play K-State. Oregon's loss last night really paves the way to the national championship if we can win out. No small task, though.

QOTD - Today is my birthday and I am working. I am also working tomorrow and Sunday. It is not all bad though since all the hours I am working today, tomorrow and Sunday are all overtime. My job does not run overtime often, so when they do I take advantage.

QOTD: My friend came back from Mexico last night (he's playing soccer down there), so we're hanging out today and probably a bunch over the weekend. I have to write two papers (I'm about halfway done with one of them) for English and I'll have math homework after class this morning. Should be interesting to see what I get done this weekend.

QOTD:
Taking two days off to relax and enjoy myself. Teaching has been wearing me out and I'm sick so I'm gonna hang out and watch football.
