EA poaches key member of MLB The Show dev team for Madden franchise

From the horse's mouth via OS

Quote

Hello everyone!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the time, thoughts, love, hate, and sense of community you've brought to me and the MLB The Show dev team! It's because of you that we have been able to go from one of the lowest rated sports games on the market to the only game to achieve a 90+ metacritic rating 3 years running! This is absolutely the best sports gaming community anywhere - we may all have differences but don't forget what brings you all together.

With that, I feel I need to let you know that I have resigned my position with SCEA. It has been a truly exciting and fun filled experience working on the MLB The Show team! I was with SCEA for 15.5 years and have been on MLB for ~9 of those years; It's time to move on. Effective Friday, Dec. 23rd I will be "unemployed" - I'll celebrate a wonderful Christmas with my family (We're hosting 15+ people for breakfast, lunch and diner... yes, we know... we're insane) and then on the 30th I'll be moving with my wife and unborn baby girl (Due March 6th) to Orlando, Florida.

Beginning Jan. 9th I begin work as a Creative Director for EA on the Madden Team. I'm sure many of you will follow along as I get to know that "sub community" while I learn and interact with the Madden fans on the site. This is a huge change in my career, and a huge change for my family. My wife and I are truly looking forward to it! Except maybe the whole mosquito thing going on in Florida... GEEZ!

Thank you again for everything you've done for me and the MLB The Show dev team. Here's to 9 more excellent years!

I hope you all have an excellent Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, New Year and anything else you may celebrate!

Questions about Madden from an NCAA Useer

I am considering making the switch over from NCAA to Madden, and wanted to see what the utopia community could tell me. The issues I have with the NCAA Series. I find this year in NCAA hard to make a CPU controlled player miss a tackle with Juke, spin, etc how is it in Madden? Broken Tackles are almost non existent in NCAA when someone sets their tackling on conservative what is it like in Madden? How is the defense vs other players online? Is it hope you can stop someone's offense one time a game or can you expect a few stops a game?

I only dare use the Packers against randoms..not surprisingly , every kid has used Eagles LOL.

but ive made all of them quit LOL and i'm not even great at football. I just call basic stuff and not let them go over the top and i'm 4 and 0 in Madden LOL

Wow, has it really been this long?

You may not believe this, but I have not played Madden or NCAA online competitively for at least a 2 years. I actually think it is closer to 3 or 4 years.

I actually kind of lost interest in video game football for most of that time. But watching all these Madden videos from nykia, IOUabeatin, and a couple of others not from this site I am really wanting to get back into some online play.

I did buy NCAA 12, but I only labbed a bout 3 hours for the first night and that was it. I bought Madden and tried playing vs the computer and I am having a hard time, heck I am losing....

Now when I stopped playing I finally had some offense since I had studied Hookem's Air Coryell write up. And I was doing a decent job scoring and winning. I think I might have stopped playing online that year with about 30 wins and 7 losses. Back when an opponent quit, you still had to play the computer to get the win.

I don't know why I wrote all this, but I am having a hard time passing and making stops on Defense. Even when I really sucked online, I had decent D. This new hot route, line adjustment set up is killing me too. Also is there still a hit stick? Or have they done away with that? Any tips would be great. I know if I am having troubles with the computer I will get killed online.

I usually use Tennessee and I like a 4-3 base cover 2 Defense. I generally like to use the offense the team is actually know to use.

It's available now for 360, later this evening on PS3. I've played 3 games and I love it. The game play is as smooth as ever, as is the UI and the play calling screen. The ball trajectory isn't fucked up so there's a very nice balance between offense and defense. I'm sure that will eventually slide over to the offensive side, but when doesn't it? I haven't had an instance where the ball hit the receiver in the head. There's more realistic pressure off the edges compared to NCAA. It just feels way better. I have no doubt this is going to be a gem to play online.

Online Communities and Various Other Things Detailed

Quote

Madden's online feature set the past few years has been filled with controversy, from ranked invites to the lackluster Online Franchise mode. While EA has already said that it isn't improving Online Franchise mode apart from some behind-the-scenes tweaks, it certainly hasn't given up on trying to improve the head-to-head and Online Team Play (OTP) experiences. We talked to Madden designer Anthony DiMento about Madden NFL 12's online features.

COMMUNITIES
Communities is EA Tiburon's way of addressing users' frequent complaints that there aren't enough "good" players to play online because of chronic quitters and griefers spoiling the fun for others. Players can create and join Communities based on whatever custom game sliders and options that the Community wants – whether that's six minute quarters or the honor system promise to stick to "sim-football" conventions like punting on fourth down or not running the same play every time. "Play who you want, and play them the way you want to play," says DiMento. Gamers who band together in Communities will play each other in head-to-head (H2H) games as well as against other Communities in three-on-three co-op squad OTP matches (complete with leaderboards for both).

Some Community features include:

*Communities can consist of two to two thousand members, and you can be a part of up to five different Communities
*They can be open to the public so anyone who reads the text description of your Community and is interested can join, or they can be invite only. Unfortunately, there is no way to solicit invite-only Communities to let you join unless they invite you in the first place
*Community creators or managers deputized by the creator can kick people out at any time
*Rules or gameplay sliders can be tweaked whenever you want
*Communities will have private lobbies, a message board, individual stat tracking, and other info and communication methods
*When you create a Community, you can choose from over 50 current and historical NFL team logos. No custom logos, unfortunately.

ONLINE TEAM PLAY
The main change to OTP this year beyond being able to do it between your Community and others (outlined above) is that boosts are gone and the camera has been moved to the traditional Madden camera. OTP has also been amended to fix the OTP griefing practice of constant encroachments (only three encroachments in a row or five in a game are allow) and delay of games. Any OTP squad stats you accrue will follow you regardless of which Community you earn them in.

INDIVIDUAL HEAD-TO-HEAD PLAY
Ranked invites remain for traditional H2H play, but developer EA Tiburon has made some modifications to try and keep the integrity of the feature. Last year people were exploiting ranked invites to friends who'd let them win in order to cheat up the leaderboards, but Madden 12 features a degenerative point system whereby if you play the same person repeatedly you'll gain less and less skill points with each win over a 10-game span until after three or four games you're not earning any even if you win.

Quitters are also being punished more harshly via more stringent rules. Any quits during a game will be not counted (and no skill points awarded to the quitter), and the remaining player will be awarded the win/skill points. DiMento also told us that there were many instances where players thought they should have been awarded a win last year because they thought the other person quit the game, when it fact it was their connection that dropped the match. In order to help alleviate confusion about who really quits in Madden 12, there is a post-game info box that explains the exact reasoning behind who is the winner/loser when someone quits.

Good to see them finally addressing people who play themselves to get to the top of the leader board. Online communities sounds like an awesome setup if you have a big enough group. Sliders in an online game = fucking brilliant. This could be the start of the end for online douche bags.
